All I can say is that I’m really looking forward to my eastbound commute home tonight.

Dirt sighting – hey Pete I saw you waiting to cross route 50 around 6:30pm while i was sitting in traffic (hang my head in shame). Recognized the green Steelwood with woodgrain deep V’s & fenders.

That intersection is part of my commute too.

Are routes being closed in from NVA? Any details available?

Last time we did MVT to Memorial and it was (excuse the pun) a walk in the park. We even got to ride on Rt 50 on the way back. New strava segment!! :)

I have seen these on the W&OD as well, maybe it’s not a treadmill, but it’s the same essence of Gym.

I saw some guy on one of these doing laps at the Crystal Ride ride a couple of years ago.

We Rode down last time from the WOD>Custis>MVT and then over Memorial bridge. We locked our bikes up near the Lincoln Memorial and walked the rest of the day. It was dead simple for us.

I may sit this years out too, but more due to the fact that I’m a wimp more than anything else.

It sends *all* the wrong messages. It makes owning a gas guzzler cheaper. Fuel efficiency becomes less important, in turn, increasing our consumption of gas from countries with questionable foreign and domestic policy. There is less incentive to be concerned about the CO2 emissions, your not paying for your roads, as has been previously mentioned. It penalizes technological advancement, by taxing diesel, hybrid, CNG and fuel cell engines more. The sheer idiotacy on this elimination of the gas tax is mind boggling. The gas tax in Va is one of the lowest in the country and hasnt been raised in over 20 years. Rather than eliminated it should be increased, potentially based on region. Higher in the more urban areas where incomes tend to be higher and traffic tends to be denser. That would incentivize using alternative transportation, lower wear and tear on the roads etc etc etc. All while not penalizing those who live in areas where distances between destinations are significantly larger.

    I’ve got a garmin 800

I use Garmin Connect primarily for logging mileage.
I’ve started using Strava more because of Freezing Saddles.
BikeJournal, because I have friends who prefer that site, that and it was the first site I started using,so its the most complete over time.

and MapMyRide for checking out potential routes.

I have the ankle band Road ID, and I just leave it on all day. My wife leaves her Road ID on her camelbak, which she always rides with.

Do you have moose mitts on the bike now and a reverse commute on the W&OD? The last three days I have seen an orange bike with moose mitts going outbound between Dunn Loring and Vienna on my way in. If it is you, I am on a white/red Cannondale, bundled up for the Klondike.

That would be me. I’ll keep an eye out.

For me personally, I use strava more as a way to see where I sit in comparison to the greater cycling community. I like to see myself in the 50% or above category placement wise, and within a page or so of friends that I ride with occasionally that I know are stronger than me. As far as racing for placement on segments; I’m not even sure where the segments are outside of my normal commute, and I’m not racing *anyone* on my commuter bike.

I will send you an email if you have more questions.
