ParticipantEven though it won’t win you the Tour, it’s a great start!

ParticipantIt doesn’t look like it. Here is the link to the Fairfax County site: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot/bike/bikelockers.htm

ParticipantThe BikeDC.net site (use the link in the first post in the thread) now says the ride is alive and well and the registration will start tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22, for the Sunday, May 22 ride.

ParticipantToday you can see several tire ruts through the mud between the two bike racks at the south end of the parking lot. I’m not sure this is a better option than the two 90° turns across the parking lot at its midpoint. This morning we had a fair amount of bicycle traffic at around 7:45 and it started getting tricky. There was also a Park Police officer in his vehicle in the lot, don’t know whether he was watching the trail, or there for something else.

ParticipantI was trying to figure out if they are trying to redirect cyclists to stay on the actual trail rather than running through the parking lot. Still won’t stop the issue with runners and walkers in the middle of the lot. We’re just about to hit the heavy use season for this area so some traffic calming/flow management is welcome.

ParticipantI was told that the NPS has already issued the maximum number of permits for using the GW Parkway for other events, but that WABA is still working on it.

ParticipantI would go with the W&OD option, hard to get lost once you get on it. Also, I would avoid bringing a group through on Sunday, August 18th since that is the date for this year’s Reston Century which utilizes the W&OD for some of the routes.

ParticipantAnd the paveing [sic] between Buckthorn and Hunter Mill was done by early afternoon on Thursday! The equipment was still there Thursday afternoon, but was gone by Friday afternoon.

ParticipantSomeone must have been listening. Between noon yesterday (Friday) and noon today (Saturday) the path has been paved and the speed bumps at the top and bottom have been removed. Thank you, NPS!

ParticipantI guess the question is what size feet you have and the type of sneakers. I wear a size 9 or 9 1/2 (or 42/43) shoe and can use a size up in booties for my mtb shoes from what I use for my road shoes. I am also able to get the size larger booties over several different pairs of sports shoes, but don’t generally use them because I don’t have booties with durable soles (my major complaint with booties in general). I had purchased a size XL PI AmFib mtb bootie that turned out to be way too big for any of my shoes, including sport shoes.

ParticipantJust to complain and moan after having to ride this for the past 10 days and having the change made with no on site warning to anyone. Since they are now working on the new bridge approach for the trail, do we assume this detour is permanent until they complete the project? Can anyone confirm that? I think that this is probably one of the worst planned/executed walking/cycling projects (and not just this most current detour) that I have ever seen. There was no similiar longterm disruption to the auto traffic over the Humpback Bridge during this project and what they do to the trail users just keeps getting worse and worse. Completion in “Spring 2011” can’t come too soon!

ParticipantFor my my standard commuter (Giant Transend), 700X32 or 700X35 studded;
for my primary road bike (Salsa Pistola), 700X25;
for back up road bike/commuter (Raleigh Team USA, shifters on the downtube), 27X1 1/4; and
back up to the back ups (Raleigh M60), 26X1.75 (both regular and studded) and have 26X2.10 knobbies it came with 17 years ago.Since I have most rides on the Giant, that was my poll answer. It came with 700X35 and I may switch back to that when my current tires wear out.

ParticipantI’ve recycled small metal parts through Arlington’s curbside program (as instructed by their waste management office). Conte’s in Ballston used to collect tires and tubes for recycling, but have stopped.

ParticipantI’m impressed with those ride times and with your dedication. I’m on my 529 bike commuting day since May 2008. Only missed one day in that stretch (that the office was open) when I had a flat develop while I was at work and wasn’t carrying the appropriate repair items (last time that happened). Had to take Metro home that day and into work the next.

ParticipantI rode the Custis and W&OD from Courthouse (Veitch St) to Vienna (Maple St). There is at least a six inch wide clear pavement strip the entire way. Most is clear, but the track is the hill before mile post 3 on the Custis,and then on the W&OD iin Falls Chruch between Little Falls and Great Falls, then both before and after the Shreve Rd crossing, and from Gallows Rd to Park St in Vienna. There will probably be reicing overnight if we get below freezing again.
