ParticipantI’m doing some research for official BikeArlington purposes and am curious about what tire/tube size you ride when commuting? The poll only allows for a certain number of choices–if you ride something other than what is listed, please write it in as a response to this thread.

ParticipantI have 700×28 gatorskins. Seem to be fairly good at warding off flats.

I had a million flats on the Gators. Was expecting better of them.
Wonder if I just got a bum set.Went to Specialized Armadillos. 2,000 miles so far, no signs of wear, and *knock on wood* no flats!
700x28s Armadillos. Was on 700×32 Gators.
MTB is on 26×2.1 knobbies for the mud or 26×1.9 studded tires for the snow.
Wife’s Scott is on 26×2.x Continentals. They’re like big steamrollers, she loves em.

ParticipantFor my my standard commuter (Giant Transend), 700X32 or 700X35 studded;
for my primary road bike (Salsa Pistola), 700X25;
for back up road bike/commuter (Raleigh Team USA, shifters on the downtube), 27X1 1/4; and
back up to the back ups (Raleigh M60), 26X1.75 (both regular and studded) and have 26X2.10 knobbies it came with 17 years ago.Since I have most rides on the Giant, that was my poll answer. It came with 700X35 and I may switch back to that when my current tires wear out.

Wonder if I just got a bum set.Well, I don’t ride quite as much as you, but it’s also possible that I got lucky with a good set. And with that, I’ve pretty much guaranteed a flat or two soon…

My city tires are Michelin Krylion Carbon in 700×23 – I’ve had one flat in ~2,500 miles I’ve had them on and that’s riding almost all on city streets in the District and Arlington. Plus they have red stripes which makes my bike faster.

I’ve had similar luck with mine. They replaced Continental Ultra Race’s which were flat magnets.

ParticipantMost durable tires I’ve used are Specialized Armadillos… the more expensive of the two that they make. I paid $105 for the pair at a local shop. Kicked myself for spending that much. I rode them for 3 years and over 15,000 miles with no flats. Only took them off because the tread was so thin that I was getting HUGE rolling resistance.
WOW DO THOSE TIRES UCK-SAY WHEN IT IS ET-WAY AND ICK-SLAY!
The Vittoria Randonneur touring tires that I have on now are better in the wet, but will be hard pressed to be as durable.

Completely agreed on this one. I have Armadillos on my Fixie that are virtually bullet-proof. I wanted the same for my Surly but shyed away due to the price and decided to go with Conti Gatorskins. While the Conti’s are great tires they’re nowhere near as bullet-proof as the Armadillos. I’ll spring for the Armadillos next time.

or
700×35/700×35Note that I did not respond to the poll since I was unsure whether you would take each response and given them 1/3 weight or so on.
