ParticipantOn a metric century from Arlington a nice trio at the turn around in Leesburg are the Doner Bistro on N Harrison, a block north of the W&OD, with a follow on at Mom’s Apple Pie a block around the corner to the east on Rte 7 (their precut pie slices fit in a jersey pocket), and then on east to Milwaukee Frozen Custard in the Leesburg Plaza to get a scoop to eat with your pie slice. You may end up eating more calories than you burned riding, but it’s pretty darn close to replacement 1:1.
OK, and yes, the slices are packaged so no mess.

ParticipantActually, the cyclist that tried to pass you was right, you should have signaled so that people behind you would know what you were trying to do. Your voice projected toward those ten feet in front frequently can not be heard by those ten feet behind. That’s not to say the other cyclist was right in anything else. You can not rely on trail markings to indicate a no passing zone like you would have on a highway. From what I have seen in riding on most of the trails in this area there is little consistency in how a trail is striped, if it is at all.

ParticipantSaw both intersections on the way home from the Ride of Silence on Wednesday night. Nobody paid any more attention to them than they did the pe-existing light setup.

ParticipantI usually get 16.3 to 16.5. If the map predates the new 4 Mile Run route and you take the 4 Mile Run Trail version from Shirlington to Bluemont instead of the W&OD, it would be closer to 18 miles.

ParticipantWe’re still waiting on my LAB bronze level “Bicycle Friendly Business” government agency to implement this. We were told early last fall it was in the works, but no news since then.

ParticipantI don’t ride much in DC, but of the CaBi riders I see on the Mt Vernon Trail, about half have helments, only slightly less than the percentage of what appear to be casual, non-CaBi riders I see on a busy day. Same with the use of ear buds.

ParticipantTitle 36 CFR Compendium- George Washington Memorial Parkway (from Page 11 dated 11-06-2007)
4.30(a) Bicylcing is prohibited in the following areas:
…
The George Washington Memorial Parkway from Mt. Vernon Circle to Interstate 495
The Clara Barton Parkway from Chain Bridge to MacArthur Boulevardhttp://www.nps.gov/gwmp/parkmgmt/upload/Compendium.2007-11-06.pdf
It’s too bad because it’s really a nice ride on a Sunday morning coming back from Mt Vernon to Alexandria and I understand the same is true on Clara Barton.

ParticipantI was heading west on Four Mile Run Dr about 4:30 yesterday afternoon and saw the police out there and a large area blocked off with yellow tape. The car was still there and did appear to have a smashed windshield in front of the driver. There was an officer taking photos of it at the time.

ParticipantPeter, since I already commute 100% by bike, and it’s over two miles one way, how do I add much value to the true underacheivers on the Blue team for the 2MC? I’m only able to add two more errand trips per week!

ParticipantWe got the link to the Cascade Challenge above, any other links to share?

ParticipantNo bike lane on MacArthur Blvd. There is a bi-directional sidepath that runs from the Anglers Inn to the Brookes Lane intersection (I think).

ParticipantIt’s dry and open all the way. The area just north of Memorial Bridge has a thin coating of dried mud that is slowly wearing off with the traffic of the past two days. May get slippery again tomorrow with the predicted rain.
