Definitely needs some work. It desperately wants to route me from Bob & Edith’s diner to the Birchmere by way of the Washington Blvd / I-395 ramp and Arlington Ridge Road. Is that even legal?

The sidewalks are supposed to be widened, but without altering the overpass supports, I don’t know how they can fit them in without squeezing everything into the available space. I think the finished design will be an improvement for cyclists and pedestrians, but I don’t have a good idea of what it will really look like.

They’re narrowing those crazy-wide lanes down to 10′-10.5′ and shrinking the median to make space for a much wider sidewalk (10′ clear for the vast majority of the length) and classy streetlights. Also no more death-trap standpipes.

Hopefully the narrower lanes and the fact that it won’t look like a *&!^ing freeway anymore will slow drivers down a bit for those of us who would like to ride in the street. The wider sidewalks will definitely be an improvement for those of us who would rather bail to the sidewalk there.

You’re counting each staple as two spaces right? One bike on each side of the staple?

    Take Action!

Report the sinkhole in the bike lane using the Report a Pothole online form. Basically ALL pothole filling in the County is complaint-based. If nobody reports it, it doesn’t get addressed.

Call (703-228-3392) or email the project manager for the Hayes Street project with your detour suggestion. The more staff hear from us about problems the more likely they are to avoid those problems on future projects.

Call the DES Call Center (703-228-6570) to report the faded bike lanes on Eads.

I got nothing on the Joyce Street project – it’s being run by the Federal Highway Administration and the project doesn’t appear to have a web page or any other contact information.

I thought WMATA was ADDING bike parking, not taking it away? Was that only inside the DC limits?

The Hayes Street project will (when completed) double the amount of bike parking at Pentagon City and some of it will be covered. :)

If I carried a backpack or a panier I’d have room for a dust broom!

This is such a common problem I’m of half a mind to buy a bunch of cheap Walmart brooms and hide them strategically along the local trails. Mark them with a secret sign or something so we can all find them when the need arises.

I suspect that you actually meant the Arlington water treatment plant on Glebe Road. There used to be a bike path between the Alexandria water treatment plant and the Beltway, but it was closed years ago.

Alexandria also has a small treatment plant just across Four Mile Run from Arlington’s – between Cora Kelly and the ball field. It is quite fragrant.

I’m feeling more and more like buttons are the way to go – dirt cheap (no offense to Dirt), water resistant, light weight and easy to attach to various items you might have on your self or on a bike: panniers, backpack, seat bag…

I’m no graphic designer, but perhaps something as simple as this?

P.S.: I’m on board for something to stick to the bike/panniers/backpack (stickers, buttons, license plates, tags, etc)

    7 Weeks Later, no improvement:

4 lights still out in the Shirlington Connector
ALL lights still out in the West Glebe Road Underpass
2 lights still out in the Mt Vernon Ave Underpass

Not sure about the button signal; after a couple weeks of it not working I’ve given up on it.

Four Mile Run Trail Status Update:

4 lights out in the Shirlington Connector
2 lights out (which is all of them) in the West Glebe Road Underpass
2 lights out (which is half of them) in the Mt Vernon Ave Underpass

The button-activated pedestrian signal in front of the Weenie Beenie has been out for several weeks. I reported it to the traffic signal hotline a while back to no avail.

We’ve been toying with the idea of starting a Kidical Mass Arlington (in part because it’s usually too far for us to bike to Kidical Mass DC stuff, and it seems odd to me to drive to a bike ride). Would people be interested?

Bamboo is a grass and it spreads like one. Almost impossible to contain. The US Botanical Garden has it planted in 1′ thick concrete bunkers.

The Project Manager will be giving a presentation on the trail to the Penrose Neighborhood Association at their July meeting if anyone would like to attend and offer up a bicycle perspective in-person.
