    1. The Federal Highway Administration says public agencies must keep pedestrian infrastructure clear of snow, it’s an ADA issue.

    2. VDOT’s stated policy is to not clear snow and ice from sidewalks or trails

When I inquired about the conflict between these two things, their Civil Rights manager informed me that “on a case by case basis, if a request is made for snow clearing/removal on sidewalks, VDOT endeavors to address those situations”

Somebody’s probably going to have to sue before there is change at VDOT.

Honestly, how can the county possibly justify just telling south Arlingtonians to suck it and they’re not going to clear the trail??? My unscientific eyeball poll said there was actually more traffic on the W&OD east of Custis than either Custis itself or W&OD west to Falls Church… yet no attention from the county. WHY?

Arlington County isn’t allowed to plow the W&OD, your beef is with NOVAParks.

Due to the emergency nature of the bridge closure, repair/replacement of the bridge is not currently funded. However, staff is requesting funding for this project for the City’s Fiscal Year 2023 budget.

Alexandria advocates may want to suggest that this would be a good use for Alexandria’s upcoming piece of American Rescue Plan Act funding.

In addition to mounts for bikes they make mounts for motorcycles. If it can keep a phone on a motorcycle, it can keep it on your bike.

I’ve been using one for about 10 years now. The only time my phone came out it was user laziness – I hadn’t fully seated it in the mount – and I had hit a speed bump somewhat unexpectedly on a downhill.

I’ve done panniers in the inside of the cart. I like to go to Giant and use their Scan It scanner gun. You can pack your panniers as you shop and then just scan the gun to pay at the end and you’re ready to jump on the bike.

I do this also. Banjo Bro panniers hook right onto the sides of the inside of the cart. I use the Scan-it gun & pack my panniers exactly how I want, then pay, walk out, hook ’em on the bike and ride off confident that I haven’t bought more than I can carry.

I also noticed a little stub of a trail leading back from the eastern side of the bridge. (You can see it on Google Earth…the right side of a “T” shape leading off from the mainline trail). Perhaps a future approach to a notional bridge over I-66 to the north side of the highway?

Arlington has been talking about improving bike & pedestrian access to the Metro Station from this side of the neighborhood for years as well as adding a West entrance. I’m guessing it’s in preparation for the possibility of a future project to do that.

Twitter tells me that the House version of the Bicyclist Safety Act has passed. This gives us a 2nd shot at Senate passage. Here’s how the vote went down last time:

YEAS–Barker, Bell, Boysko, DeSteph, Ebbin, Favola, Hashmi, Lewis, Marsden, Mason, McClellan, McPike, Morrissey, Petersen, Spruill, Surovell–16.

NAYS–Chase, Cosgrove, Deeds, Dunnavant, Edwards, Hanger, Howell, Kiggans, Locke, Lucas, McDougle, Newman, Norment, Obenshain, Peake, Pillion, Reeves, Ruff, Saslaw, Stuart, Suetterlein, Vogel–22.

    RULE 36–0.

    NOT VOTING–Stanley–1.

If your state senator is Howell or Saslaw, we REALLY need you to reach out to them and try to change their vote. Hopefully our friends in other areas of the state will do their part as well and we can get this to 20 YEAS.

Here’s a good FAQ from the VA Bike Federation

The ready-mix plant is one of the last remaining legacies of the W&OD. All this stuff (ingredients of portland cement concrete) used to arrive by rail–and there was an at-grade crossing of Shirley Highway. That must have been exciting.

Transit improvements are described in a report from the BID, the Army-Navy Drive 2-way protected bicycle lane is mentioned on page 10.

The County will be building the 2-way PBL shown at the bottom of the rendering (it’s the Army Navy Drive Complete Streets project expected construction start: Spring 2022, expected constrution completion: Fall of 2024)

The developer would be expected to build their side of the Eads Street PBL (shown on the left side of the rendering) as part of building construction, with the County building the far side (as part of the next phase of the South Eads Complete Streets project hopefully this year?)

Bummer! That was a great restroom stop!

It’s being replaced with a new hotel and a residential building, though the residential building will be built first. Hopefully when the new hotel is done it will be an even nicer restroom stop. :)

The Federal Gov has shut down part of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The dirt/gravel/broken road portion that circumvents the Mayfair neighborhood now has big concrete roadblocks up that say “No Trespassing”. I guess this wasn’t really part of the trail since the Mayfair neighborhood does have protected bike lanes through most of it.

Anyone know why? Never even realized this was federal land.

Looks like they’re getting ready to clean up the landfill that this shortcut runs over top of, that’s likely the reason for the closure.
