    a HOT mess! ;)

Oddly enough (because I love wine so much), I’m not a big white wine fan. I love a cheap red, they wash down gnats best.

NW Branch trail between Route 1 and 38th Street – Closed Trail sign up by the skate park, but nothing was up moving from West to East. I was easily able to navigate the path, the dirt was hard packed. Despite being wet (rain last night) the trail wasn’t the mud bog we saw earlier on the other section. The workers were friendly, one mentioned I might need a 4-wheel drive. My response, naturally, was that I’d be happy with 2-wheel drive LOL.

NE Branch trail between Route 1 and Decatur was still closed, but the hard pack dirt was also not a mud bug. Just across Decatur, the closed trail sign is STILL up, and they were working on the side of the trail (erosion control, it seemed). Other than the stink-eye from one worker, I had no trouble ignoring the Trail Closed sign and taking the path. MY apologies to the workers if I offended them by ignoring their sign. I just don’t understand why that is still closed, it’s been paved for a while now.

Where do you ride from/to? Maybe if someone is waiting for you at your starting point, it’ll motivate you… one of us should be able to do that to support you!

I appreciate it, but I’m pretty far away from everyone else :( My commute starts in Bethesda and goes down (mostly) the Sligo Creek trail/parkway. I ride either the trail or the parkway depending how traffic conditions are and how strong I’m feeling. I end up at New Carrollton Metro station (20 miles) to take an express bus to Bowie, then a mere 3.5 mile ride from there to work. It wouldn’t all be so bad if it was just the 20. Hopping a bus and stuff really adds time.

When it comes right down to it, I just need to be happy with the number of days I do get in, and keep motivated to Just Do Itâ„¢.

    …was, again, a drive.

I’m SO mad at myself. I only rode in once this week, at a time when my goal is to move to 3 days/week.

Today is so nice, too, I definitely could have rode today

and… that’s the only tape/bandage they had? Could they not see your watch and know they needed to raid the pediatrics wing?

My knees and legs hurt when I bike, but my back hurts a WHOLE lot less. I’ve lost a lot of weight, gained a few friends, had a lot of fun, changed a few lives (back in my mentor days), and am probably prolonging my life considerably. There’s not many downsides, but a whole lot of great benefits. The math works out.

I haven’t found out what street she was riding on yet – it was in this area though. She’s been posting on Facebook in the last day or so and sounding pretty chipper for being badly bashed up – I’m going to try to get over to see her today if I can figure out how to get up to Washington Hospital Center by Metro.

The thought of getting hit from behind is scary since you’ve got very little control of the situation :(

Best wishes for a speedy recover for her!

That is my biggest fear, getting run down from behind. So scary!

I think he means he wants to bike from the DC area to the Bay. I have no first-hand experience biking East of DC, but from following biking stuff around here, it seems like that’s the worst place in the area to ride. PG County, in particular, seems SCARY for bikes. I hope I’m wrong and someone who’s biked over there can give you a safe route.

Greenbelt has a nice route that goes from College Park up to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor (on the Chesapeake Bay) which is, from what I hear, a very nice route. So if he’s intent on visiting “The Chesapeake Bay” and isn’t particular about which part of the bay that might be a good route to follow. If, however, he wishes to visit another part of the bay then it’s a different ballpark as you mention (PG county, etc).

Anyway, here’s Greenbelt’s College Park to Inner Harbor route:
    https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=9217+Baltimore+Avenue,+College+Park,+MD&daddr=39.02308,-76.90658+to:39.04753,-76.86639+to:39.18033,-76.73203+to:39.2224785,-76.6726104+to:W+Conway+St&hl=en&sll=39.056784,-76.8013&sspn=0.143696,0.265045&geocode=FQQxUwIdgiVq-ylJP0NNBcS3iTG9bY_VHrfVIA%3BFehxUwIdrH9q-yk_YTvQj8O3iTGoJw1KK5ErNA%3BFWrRUwIdqhxr-ylLTwKa4cK3iTFj-nT3zmzZNg%3BFSrYVQIdgilt-ymjGh-WKuK3iTEQ_xu58eLNxQ%3BFc58VgIdnhFu-ym5NMkOZR3IiTFiugA33hIwxQ%3BFY5tVwId8vNu-w&dirflg=b&mra=dpe&mrsp=2&sz=12&via=1,2,3,4&t=m&lci=bike&z=12

and he may have a ridewithgps or mapmyride route as well, hopefully he’ll see this and chime in. It’s a ~36 mile ride, so would be a bit longer from inside DC but the Metro options could shorten the ride either way and there are MARC trains if he runs in to an issue on the bike that would get him back to DC safely.

I drove, again, but with no bike :(

However, my brother called me last night to say he was in town and wanted to have dinner tonight (whee!). The miles should work out though, since I’ll bike in and home tomorrow instead of doing 1/2 today and 1/2 tomorrow. I just need to make up some serious mileage this weekend for the Strava/Skratch labs challenge since I had intended on riding 3-4 days this week.

My goal is to put in about 60-70, I was looking at riding to Chesapeake Bay and back.

The Chesapeake Bay is massive, it is 200+ miles long. It starts up around the Susquehanna flats (North East, MD / Havre De Grace, MD and awesome fishing by the way!) and extends down past Norfolk / Virginia Beach. There’s definitely some great riding in the area, but we’ll need something a bit more specific :)

I do too, but 24 miles and a bus ride just to get to work (and another 24 and a bus ride to get home) doesn’t always fit in to my max hours in the day :( I refuse to sleep less!

I drove in today too, and I wasn’t happy about it — even though there was no traffic. I’m really going to hate it on the way home. It was my first missed bike commute since early June.

to add insult to injury, there was an accident on the Beltway this morning and my inner loop drive took twice as long as it should’ve. To add a good swift bootkick to the injury, the accident was on the OUTER loop, all lanes of the inner loop were open, but the idiot drivers in this area have to tie up 5 miles of beltway just so they can see the empty smashed cars.
