DaveK’s favorite motivational quote that I like to say is “Make the easy days easy, so that you can make the hard days hard.”

From the most general viewpoint, to see the best gains you’ll need to have enough of a variation between days to give you body rest. It’s not the workout that you do that makes you faster, it’s the rest/recovery you have after the workout that makes you faster. You can probably ride every day and throw in a day or two each week of hard intervals spaced out with some easier days in between.

awesome! Thanks. I won’t be qualifying for any races (even cat 6 lol) anytime soon, but definitely am hoping to get a little faster on my commutes.

isn’t riding that many bikes at once illegal?

I LIKE riding at a moderate pace. With all due respect to our resident triathlete – I never get this. Riding a bike to me is…. fun. Kill myself on my way home???? Make myself blurry??? But there are puppy dogs to watch!!! And rowers on the potomac! And the sun is rising over the Capital.

I ride cause I love my ride. At 50, I am faster than 85% of the riders – slower than all of the ELITE riders – and who cares?! I dont understand the question. I dont do this for pain?!?!? I do this for the joy of the ride!! (that an the excuse to eat all the ice cream I want).

While I also love my ride, I wouldn’t mind going a little faster. It takes about 2 hours, including the bus ride, to get to work. I’m hoping I can cut it down a little, which would give me more time each day. That would make it easier to ride every day, instead of sucking up 20 hours a week commuting.

if people don’t laugh me off the trail for appearing to be 9 months pregnant, I’m sure they won’t laugh you off the trail for actually being 9 months pregnant. Just be visible, nothing else matters!

How about killing yourself on the way home?

    Tim :( I thought you liked me :( :(

Thanks for all the suggestions! I kind of figured “intervals” would be a primary reply. I’ve read about riding at the same pace makes you really good at riding at the same pace. I try to push myself harder each time, but my average speed is only barely going up. I know some people say the best way to get better at riding is to ride heh. So, as hard as it is for me to make myself slow down, I’ll do that. There are some nice spots on my commute where I can ride hard, followed by spots where I can transition to a recovery speed. How about ‘recovery days’? Am I at the level where I actually need many recovery days? I know that sometimes (some days) I’m a bit sore, not so much that I can’t walk like when you first start a new workout, but enough that I worry I might need a little recovery time.

as I mentioned on Facebook, the original fender brackets do work with the bike planet fenders. I ran in to some issues using the bike plant mounts though, they’re just not shaped right to go around the brake properly. I know you used the front rack mounts, instead of the fender mounts, since you don’t need a front rack anyways…. So, I don’t know if it will help to use the stock brackets or not, but it works out really well for me. Maybe because they’re sturdier brackets, it wouldn’t fold up on you? Dunno, hope it helps though.

Sorry to hear you got hit! But very happy you’re OK. Getting mowed down from behind is my worst fear.

I used to fall asleep at the wheel, well… honestly, just about every single day. It didn’t even matter much how long the drive was, 15 minutes, 30 minutes… Hopefully the driver (sorry, not meant to be a pun) takes this as a wake up call and gets checked out. I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. I wear a BI-PAP machine every night now. I can’t even sleep without it anymore. I sleep like a baby, no more falling asleep at the wheel. Safer for everyone around me. If you get a chance to speak with the driver again, please ask him to get a sleep study. If he doesn’t, he will eventually kill someone.

ooh, very probably. I didn’t see anything at all, so just figured he had forgot to paste it or something. I see the attachment now. Thanks! I absolutely am entranced by all these maps, I’m a very visual person. I especially like the ones where the map is just bleeding red all over. I’m already planning some future rides over different parts of the DC area so my map is redder.

I want to ride faster on my commute. There are many times, especially in the afternoon, when I don’t feel fast enough to jump out on to the Sligo Creek Parkway. So I take the path, which is slower (but safer if I can’t maintain a faster speed).

So, what are ways to increase my commute speed? I don’t do too many non-commute rides, but am seriously considering buy a trainer for the evening/cold times when I wouldn’t mind spinning mindlessly while watching TV. I also need to be careful not to completely kill myself on my commutes. Back in the hotter days, I did that a couple of times and had to metro home :(
