Sign up for the beta How’s My Driving app to report violations like these. I’m convinced my efforts helped result in the new bike lane barriers in DC’s Banneker Circle.

I have seen the light and it is an electric bicycle.

I’ve had a number of service requests result in tickets issued; the DPW officer will add notes when closing the ticket some of the time to note 1 ticket issued (or no violations found or whatever). You can also see that more gloablly in the corresponding OpenDataDC dataset if you were so inclined.

Because of the lag between request and enforcement action, it’s never the same bad actor, but that’s to be expected. I’m also good with DPW or DC Police making people move w/o a ticket being issued; it’s the behavior/blockage that I’m concerned with stopping.

That’s gratifying that some enforcement occurs as a result of 311 requests. Thanks for the tip re. OpenDataDC, too – I think I found the page and can see some enforcement actions in hotspots that I’m aware of: http://opendata.dc.gov/datasets/parking-enforcement-in-the-last-30-days

I can also send a link to this thread to Mark in case he has a chance to weigh in himself.

I’d love to ask them about enforcement issues faced by DC authorities as a result of this app. I’ve been reporting bike lane violations via DC 311 for many months now and haven’t yet heard about a ticket being issued to offending vehicles. Once I saw a DPW vehicle drive by two buses parked in the lane, dislodging them but otherwise taking no action.

I’m content to continue building up the data with How’s My Driving, but from an enforcement perspective, it’s a very frustrating experience.

With initiatives like How’s My Driving, I think the future is bright for bettering non-car infrastructure in this region. I’m curious, do you have the ear of the app developers? I wonder how integrated they are into the VA enforcement systems and whether BPAC could help. I’d personally love to hear from them in an upcoming meeting.

    I just joined with a 2-year $60 membership, so I suppose WABA got $120 :)

A battery powered angle grinder can free any bike from the hardest of steel locks in no more than 60 seconds. Locks can only ever be illusions of safety, but let’s not pretend that a bike thief knows the first thing about lock picking. The Wirecutter did a great piece on locks: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-bike-lock/

I’ve used plenty it an like it a lot! I wish it was less DC-centric, but I think it’s got a dev team of one person so I can give it a pass. If you’re looking for a good place to try it out, swing by the part of L’Enfant SW that connects to Maine Ave sometime around noon – there are typically multiple buses parked in the bike lanes. Occasionally the driver will get out and be mad as I take the pic on my phone but so far none has actually done anything.

I’ve never witnessed or been informed of DC authorities, whether parking enforcement or police, actually doing anything about the violations I report. I hope that will change with the authorities’ newish noises of resolve to better police bike infrastructure in the District.

Another great place to report these sort of things is http://www.bikelaneuprising.com. It’s neither home-grown nor an app, but I figure more data in more places is a good thing.

I did the same last week via Call.Click.Connect, but heard that the more personal the better, so on the way home I also delivered a hand-written letter to the mayor’s office supporting alternative 3. It was easy and I hope others can do the same.

Make sure to check https://bikeindex.org/ and https://project529.com/garage/bikes/search to see if this bike is missing. Also contact Arlington PD as they maintain a bike registry and may be able to help: https://police.arlingtonva.us/prevention-safety/bicycle-safety/. Thanks for doing the right thing to reunite this bike with its owner :)

Wyoming legislature approves 3-class ebike law, signed by governor Gordon becoming the 12th state to do so.

Maryland has introduced ebike legislation this year: HB 939 (sponsor delegate Cassilly (R) Cecil & Harford Counties) and SB 935 (sponsor senator Waldstreicher (D) Montgomery County) with a potential effective date of October 1, 2019, would enact the 3-class system, raise the power limit from 500w to 750w in line with the other states, and permit Class 1 and 2 ebikes everywhere a bicycle may ride, Class 3 ebikes would be prohibited from bike paths unless on or adjacent to a highway. The proposed law would permit localities to prohibit Class 1 and 2 ebikes from bike paths, unclear how/if that changes anything on bike paths already signposted ‘no motorized vehicles’.

Looks like the MD bill was passed and signed into law: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frmMain.aspx?pid=billpage&stab=01&id=HB0939&tab=subject3&ys=2019rs

Things are getting heated on the GGWash post. Lots of locals weighing in against it – it would be great to have some counterbalance from members of this forum :)

I’m not pictured either but was in that corner in a black puffy jacket. Maybe you spotted me?

    Here’s my comment:

Scooters are a fantastic addition to the transportation mix in our region. They also increase public support for transport infrastructure for vehicles other than cars, which has previously been dominated by the insular bike community. As the scooter-riding public realizes that non-car transport is viable and even desirable, and infrastructure is lacking for anything other than cars or pedestrians, then public support for “bike” lanes will increase. Therefore, scooters, apart from a great transit solution also represent a tide that will raise all ships.

I’m glad I showed up! And I think I’ve been roped in to join a subcommittee. Still glad I showed up!
