I’ve been considering mounting a bar in front of the box to mount lights and a camera on. I don’t want it to interfere with the kids leaning against the front of the box, so it should be off the front a bit. Thoughts?

You could probably mount it off the side of the box near the front if you mount it to the box itself. Then you don’t have to worry about a passenger leaning on it or blocking the camera.

Cool–I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to mount a camera. I think it’d be fun to have it facing back at the rider and passenger too.

Before I had the mount I tried a few different setups when making this video (another Kidical Mass ride): http://youtu.be/QVctDyJI6LA

For the views facing backwards (of rider and passenger) the camera was just in the box sort of attached to my bag. Definitely makes for a fun video that way. I’ll have to give it another try now that I have the mount.

Tell me about your mounting setup for the camera here. What camera/mount did you use?

GoPro Hero 2 (older model) with the roll bar mount (http://gopro.com/camera-mounts/roll-bar-mount) attached to the head tube of the Bullitt (directly in front of the box). This video also uses YouTube’s stabilization feature which seems to work decently – here is the original un-stabilized version: http://youtu.be/zuutTWSnI-4

Looks like the first route link is an old copy & paste (from the October Halloween ride). The correct route is the second link: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3787943

When he’s hand pedaling, what brakes does he use?

Good question. Judging from the photo, I’d guess he would have to move his hands back to the handlebars and use the regular brakes.

Only took me 4 months to actually post a photo… The box isn’t as reflective as I had hoped but it does reflect a little bit. The glass bead powder directions said I could either mix it in with paint / polyurethane or sprinkle the powder on wet paint / poly. I went with the polyurethane mix-in method (on top of orange stain for hi-vis and I liked the color combo with the blue frame). If the light hits it just right during the day the box sparkles, so that’s kind of cool.

Here is a daytime photo for comparison:

With the Mount Vernon Trail technically closed during the federal shutdown, does that impact the Arlington Fun Ride?

Me: Riding eastbound on PA Ave NW coming out of Georgetown just before the red light at 26th St. I had recently gotten in the left hand lane to prepare for a left hand turn.
You: Patriot Cab (#35) driver who decided to completely cross the double yellow lines to drive on the wrong side of the road to pass me even though you were driving directly into oncoming traffic that was turning left from 26th onto PA Ave heading towards Georgetown.

Look, I get that you might not realize the left hand lane was the legal and proper place for me to be at the time, but maybe honk*, yell*, or use one of the other multiple legal lanes next time instead of going all salmon-crazy. And the light was red, I caught up to you about 3 seconds later.

*I am not advocating drivers honking and yelling, but would have preferred it in this situation.

The seat we have for mutilating is something like this (I have NO IDEA what brand, and it’s used, but it looks basically like that). Say the word and it’s yours.

I like the idea of having the sides to lean against when she get tired though I don’t think I want to add something that big to the box. I definitely appreciate the offer and will let you know if I second guess myself.

The bench sounds great… maybe a DIY project to look into.

Have you considered bolting in a seat? We have one that friends gave us that could be mutilated to work with a box — the piece to attach it to a normal bike broke off, so it’s ripe for the sawing and bolting….

It’s something I’ve considered but haven’t really looked into yet. I’d definitely like to check out the seat your have, thanks! Is it basically a wooden bench?

dasgeh, what is the pad thing called that your son leans against in your bakfiets (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedrogringo/9791847063/in/photostream/)?

My daughter has fallen asleep on multiple occasions and I’ve been trying to figure out a setup so she can sleep comfortably. Right now I usually just put a bag next to her that she can lean on (not the most comfortable I’m sure) but if she could lean forward onto something that would probably be fairly comfy.

Lazy kid in the back, or forced labor in the front?

Maybe the rear kid is responsible for braking Flintstones-style because I don’t see a place the feet to go.
