Pretty much every study ever shows that they are remarkably effective, but people are scared of them because something.

Because change. People always fear what they’re not used to.

And I’m just talking about this intersection in particular with what I think are limited sight issues and the ability for drivers to blow through here without tapping their brakes. But I’m no traffic engineer – if this is a prime candidate, go for it.

Ah ok, so these are roundabouts, not traffic circles, according to that article.

I’d be all for 4-way yielding roundabouts if I thought drivers would actually yield and not blow through them (like they frequently do with the stop signs).

This intersection is on my daily commute although, I travel through the stop signs to cross 50. As one of those people that does come to an almost complete stop while biking, I wish they would get rid of those stop signs. Traffic circles shouldn’t have stop signs since that defeats the purpose of a traffic circle.

I feel like these traffic circles are too small to be treated like normal roundabouts where everyone yields while entering. When drivers are at speed they barely have to slow down (even though they should) and are through the intersection in a second or two. At larger roundabouts you can see traffic already in the circle pretty clearly and the entrances are more spread out. At this intersection especially there is not great visibility between those heading south on Henderson and those heading west on 2nd St. I’m afraid there would be (more) collisions without the stop signs.

That being said, I don’t drive or bike on traditional traffic circles very often (unless you count these small neighborhood circles) so maybe my understanding of them is a little off. Even the larger circles in the area like DuPont and Washington circles in DC are controlled with lights.

Thanks! How did you get them to come out during _evening_ rush? We’ve been trying to get ACPD at Lynn and Lee during evening rush since… forever… This is helpful to know.

Good question. I didn’t specifically ask them to show up at certain times, I had only mentioned that I thought a lot of this was cut-through traffic to Rt 50.

The 30 day period is up and I received the following email from Sergeant Tabibi:

Good morning Mr. Jones, during the thirty day period the First District Team issued 59 citations at 2nd Road and Henderson Road. Members concentrated their efforts during morning and evening rush hours and were present at the intersection on sixteen different days during the thirty day period.

We will continue to conduct enforcement at the intersection as time permits to try and ensure the safety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I’m not sure if her feet will reach yet but will definitely give it a try. Maybe I’ll mount a little seat on the top tube…

So they put up a sign, telling drivers to obey the stop sign, had marked police cars out there, and drivers still did not obey the stop sign? *FOREHEAD TO KEYBOARD*

Well the driver that I saw pulled over was heading north and the officer that pulled him over was in an unmarked police car. The sign is readable heading south and the second (marked) police car was on 2nd Street and would be totally hidden driving north. Not that I’m making excuses for someone running a stop sign… Just *maybe* they weren’t completely oblivious. Possibly just run-of-the-mill endangering the lives of others (slight snark implied in this last sentence).

Saw this today too plus two police cars. One sitting near the intersection on 2nd, another with someone pulled over on Henderson. Did not expect to get this much attention this fast here so that’s great.

When I was riding through there around 5 p.m. today, I saw an Arlington police car sitting on 2nd St N facing east toward the circle. Hopefully that forced people to be a little more honest about the stop signs.

I saw an officer had someone pulled over around 6pm on Henderson. I bet that intersection will keep them busy.

I tweeted @ArlingtonVaPD yesterday and emailed Captain Donahue (the first district commander) this morning. I quickly received replies from both and am very pleased with the responses.

    From Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonVaPD/status/634362914825224193

staff will deploy a sign board in this area followed by periodic assignment of an officer. Expect PD presence in near future.

    From Captain Donahue via email:

I was forwarded your traffic complaint from the person who manages our Twitter account yesterday afternoon and I have reviewed the video. We will assign an officer to do enforcement there over the next thirty days and I will have Sergeant Tabibi from my First District team reach out to you with the results. I will also forward the issue to our Traffic Engineering Section to see if any sign improvements can be made there. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
