Or more! I always take the west side of key bridge in the morning, so I only get counted once daily.

My friend here at work who has been a cyclist forever (commuting, but also mega-touring all over Europe–even crossed the alps in a snow storm!) will not make the W&OD crossings at Hunter Mill or Cedar because of the stuff he’s seen there: cars spinning out into each other, etc. Sometimes I wonder if using exclusively on-street routes would be safer than any MUP that includes road crossings. He’s decided not to ride his commute from Reston into the District anymore; he rides a mile to a bus stop and locks his bike up there.
Yeah, for whatever reason, Hunter Mill has high speeds for a single-lane in each direction road (whether legal or not) and just terrible sight lines. I always wait for both directions to completely stop before entering the roadway to cross, and keep an eye out for vehicles exiting the adjacent parking lot. This sometimes annoys the drivers, but sometimes they see why I do that when the opposing traffic doesn’t bother to slow/stop or slows a bit but rolls through anyway. There are some places I nudge into the roadway to assert a crossing right…but not there.

ParticipantNow I’m having flashbacks to the piezoelectric carbon ampule printer my dad got from the DAK catalog that printed like a dot matrix printer, except instead of 10 vertical pixels per horizontal traversal, it printed one line of pixels per horizontal traversal, but it traversed very very very fast (at least for devices of the time). In draft mode, all the characters looked a bit like they were shivering…

Yeah, I knew there were two cars, but I didn’t expect the second to come around, and didn’t see it happen because I looked the other way to make sure there were no cars coming from the other direction: he must have started around when my head was turned. I don’t see a way out of this situation, except for people not to be dicks.
Thanks for your kind words, BTW.
Sometimes in this type of situation I say/mouth “I can’t. Too dangerous. Thanks.”, lift up my hands and shrug.
Especially at Gallows Road. The things I’ve seen there…

Hadn’t looked at the Pacer. I was stuck on the 26″ version of the LHT for some reason; you are correct that the 700c is lower, which makes sense (also makes sense that the 26″ LHT is higher).
Not sure if I posted on this particular thread but: from what I’ve been told, the 26″ LHT has a much different ride than the 700c LHT. If you’re in the height range where a 26″ LHT might be a fit, it’s worth test-ride comparing it to the 700c (if applicable) LHT as well as the CC/Pacer/Straggler…

ParticipantMe: An eastward-bound cargo cyclist who just called and passed a pedestrian and positioned to make the sharp right turn to head up the hill to Brandymore Castle.
Yinz: Four cyclists pacelining eastward on the W&OD during rush hour, passing on the centerline (you do realize how difficult it is to keep a cargo bike pinned to the far right side of the trail there to ensure not getting elbowed/elbowing) and left side of the trail before/during/after the blind turn and while cycling up the hill. Well, I suppose ‘partially passing’ since the last guy ends up paralleling me on the wrong side of the trail going up the hill for a while until I hit the brakes so that he doesn’t take out cyclists headed down the hill.Basically, WTFH are you doing?

The timing on the train into Pbgh is bad, too. It gets in at around midnight or shortly thereafter IIRC from the last time I looked at the schedule, which is too bad, b/c I’m sure it’s a nice train ride otherwise.
Another option besides rental car/van is bus. Not sure what Greyhound/Bolt/etc.’s baggage restrictions are for oversized bikes like a Big Dummy or a tandem, but I no know that you can check a boxed bike as luggage on the bus pretty easily.
The greyhound bike size restrictions appear to be smaller than amtrak, according to the websites.
I’ll run the numbers on a van/car rental option and do some partially disassembled measurements research…
Thanks.

ParticipantPlanning a pgh->DC ride in july and just realized I might have a problem with the dummy due to the 50lb/70″ limit. I think that means normally my cargo bike won’t be allowed. Also: “Recumbent, tandem and special bicycles over the standard bicycle dimensions and will not fit in a standard bicycle box are prohibited.”
I wonder if I remove the front wheel & fork/steerer and strip it of enough accessories it’s under 50lbs before packing it if it’ll fit and be accepted?

Nothing very interesting except I don’t understand people that keep semi-shoaling up hilly streets in Georgetown. This guy and I kept switching places because it would go around me to the left or right attempting a track stand at every light and then I would have to pass him over and over because he wasn’t very fast going uphill (quite frankly, neither am I, but in this case, I am faster).
Which streets are we talking about?
