Why do I bike to work? I would bike to somewhere else but I need the money. 😎
We have a winner.

ParticipantI just keep repeating to myself: “at least there’s no ice, at least there’s no ice”.

I skipped my usual W&OD exit point with the intention of doing an Arlington loop…got as far as the Custis connector and decided the trail was just too crazy to make it worth the frustration. The ice has been replaced by clueless n00bs.
The trail will definitely be slower (edit: for the non-insane riders, that is) from yesterday afternoon onward. Maybe head away from the crowding first, if adding miles to the commute?

ParticipantThe monolith was glorious.
Also, Pete is an exemplary bike ambassador.

ParticipantThe first joke I came up with as a kid (mid ’70s) that *actually* entertained the adults:
“What did the pilgrims drink?”
“Plymouth on the rocks.”
(must have been around thanksgiving … and my grandfathers were both fond of strong drink…)

ParticipantI steered Ed this way to ask the question. But also, so that when the answer got posted, I could plan a ride around it too..

Totally bummed I couldn’t be there. I work about 400 yards away, but I had a 10am meeting I could not bag out of. Anyway, I’ll add my +1 to the counter on the way home tonight.
Hmm. I’m going to be one of the ones only adding single digit counts to the counter on commuting days, since I only cross the intersection of doom on my return to DC. In the mornings, I go through the hotel parking lot from the west side of key bridge.

It got me thinking, though, what my real, soundbite appropriate answer is. And I thought I’d throw it out to the forum-all stars.
It makes me happy.

You ride up next to a cyclist, start up a conversation with them about their belt-driven, 8-speed internal hub Trek, carry on this conversation for several blocks before realizing the rider is a former co-worker from your last job. This happened to me this morning.
Helmet blindness. The same kind of thing happens to bike people when they see other bike people in a non-bike, helmet-free context too.

Oh, yes, I have no doubt of this. I was surprised myself. Calculator suggests that my BMR should be 1760 calories, so 3,000 (or maybe it’s 3,200 I haven’t quite figured it out) is obviously a little skewed. Honestly, having my metabolism slow down a bit would not be all bad; eating that much is kinda costly. And with two growing boys that apparently love eating ….
I’d prefer my appetite slow down than my metabolism…

ParticipantMy evening commute: heading eastward on the W&OD. I biked up the I-66 climb to Virginia Ave shifted about 3 or 4 cogs higher gear than usual. Something about the warm air/super-nice weather. And my very very rested (from a cycling perspective) legs. It was nice.
PS – where did all those people come from??? they weren’t commuting this morning…

ParticipantSo, should I put my bar mitts in the wash tonight?

The longest and hilliest portion of my commute is oriented N/NW, so it was a rough ride this morning. Hoping the ride home, going S/SE, will make up for it.
I haven’t decided if a headwind is worse on the downhills (where you lose so much more speed and/or have to put a lot more effort in to keep up your still-air speed) or on the uphills (where it adds some insult to injury…but doesn’t really slow you down *that much*, especially on the higher grades). In general, though, that whole velocity-squared thing kinda sucks.

ParticipantAll the folks pedaling east/souteast were smiling pretty big as they flew by. Myself, I am happy enough to be bike commuting not to complain.
