not much to go on–there are bamboo stands all over fairfax county at least. I have always wondered why.

Thats true. I should have picked a more unique setting but I was afraid I would give it away to easily. I didn’t realized bamboo was so readily available in some areas. That was taken on the Bethesda Trolley Trail. I will try to do better next time.

I have been on this forum for a while now and have posted a few times but it seems I am becoming more and more involved in the DC cycling community. I figured an introduction is in order. I have lived in DC for 2.5 years now. I recently made the conversion from mountain bike to road/cross bikes. Already I am planning to ride two centuries (Civil War and Seagull) in the fall. At this point, I am still exploring new trails in the area. Today, I had the day off so I knocked out 40 miles after the rain stopped. This was a new ride for me and no, I didn’t cycle through the panda exhibit at the zoo. If you see me on the big Blue with my bright blue shoes please stop and say hello.

The reach section of that stem angles down. Instead find a stem that angles up. Thus, raising the level of the handlebar. Reach is really the horizontal plane your body must travel to reach the bars. So consider where you would like the bars to be. If you bring your bike to a shop and sample some of their stems you should be set it next to your bike and get a pretty good idea where things will be. However, it appears the angle of your stem is the most important.

Is that a Van Dessel G&T I see there? My brother-in-law rolls around town on one of those in Maxxis orange. Actually, its for sale right now. I love that bike.

I use Frogs on the mountain bike. Those are Speedplay Zeros.

I miss that green frame. I broke 2 of them and finally gave up on them. They sent me their high-end cross bike as a replacement.

I’m still looking for a replacement for the frame for that. I’ll likely end up with a Civia Bryant. I’ll likely buy one in the next month or so. Depends on what they have in stock.

Yes, a cyclocross bike will work. It is one of my favorite rides around here. It’s beautiful, quiet and shaded. Bring your camera.

Thanks, sounds like I have a new adventure coming.

Cross County Trail (CCT) Fairfax. A great trail which will take you from the shores of the potomac to the shores of the Occoquan. However, it is in various stages of completion and development. Some parts of the trail are just dirt path through woods, some are crushed stone, some are pavement, some are on county roads. Some is poorly marked – and some parts immediately transform without warning – at places you will be dropped into streams. It does cut through Wakefield which is a great mountain biking park. It does cross the W&OD. It does go near Lake Fairfax.

It is a fun adventure. Dont do it on a road bike (or bring lots of spare tubes).

This last weekend I took the subway to Springfield and biked north to Vienna on the CCT, and then went East on W&OD home. Gotta say, it was really fun.

And on the fourth day was created the Cyclecross bike, and the people rejoiced.

I can’t fully express how much joy my daily CX detour through DR, CCT and the MTB trails of Lake Fairfax Park has brought me… Now the new layer of filth that overpowers even my mighty ShowerPill is a work in process.

    Hey thanks,
I learned about some new trails today!!!!!

I took off Avid Shorty 6s and installed Avid Ultimates on my Blue Norcross EX. Love them. Mega power, easy modulation, and great adjustability. They were a huge upgrade over the original brakes. They can also be setup wide for mud clearance or narrow for power. TRP and Paul make nice cantis for cross bikes as well. But for the price Avid Ultimates can’t be beat in my opinion.

I was experiencing the same issue two years ago and didn’t want to spend too much money for a new seatpost. When the seat was tilting backwards, it hurts by private part badly. I found out that my Allen head screw under seat was damaged. I bought a new machine Hex bolt with same size from Ace Hardware for 65 cent. I used a long Sears machine wrench to tight it down. I haven’t moved since then. You don’t want to try it if you have carbon seatpost.

Ace Hardware is the best for screws and bolt. The limit screw of my front derailleur also came off too. The bike shop told me it costs $80 to replace the derailleur because the manufacturer doesn’t sell the screw. A 30 cents screw from Ace fixed it as well.

Great recommendation!!!!! However, I have had a seatpost completely fail on me at the seat mount exposing my man parts to the sharp end of the post. Once a seatpost starts doing what the OPs is doing, there is no way I would ever ride it again. I just wouldn’t trust it. Thats just me and my gentlemen sausage talking though.
