AFAIK, VDOT’s official position is that they don’t routine maintenance on trails. First you’d ask for snow removal, then you’d ask for vegetation trimming and debris cleanup, who knows where it would end?
Maybe they should just execute an MOU with Arlington County to perform trail maintenance if VDOT can’t/won’t do it.

Yes, it is treacherous and with tonights temperature dropping further its going to be like this tomorrow as well. I was glad I was wearing ice cleats on my shoes to push the bike
Is it even worth raising trail condition with VDOT, or it is a lost cause? I had a little “run in” with a road crew on the trail last summer. They thought it was appropriate to close the trail and park heavy equipment, and put up signs a couple hundred feet in advance. (Not at Pershing, btw.) What am I supposed to do, ride back up to Pershing, or “take the lane” on Rt. 50?

ParticipantFort Myer trail parallel to Rt. 50 was an icy mess this morning (not that I really expected otherwise but curiosity got the better of me.) Not just sheets of black ice, but lumpy frozen slush across the entire surface. Does VDOT ever clear this trail, or do they wait on Mother Nature?

ParticipantRode a CaBi to work today from Thomas and Carlin Springs to Dupont. (Yes, trash someone else’s bike drivetrain in the salt.) Anyway, the Clarendon bike lanes are largely impassable. And the sidewalk on Key Bridge, forget it. Took the lane. The DDOT does a way better job plowing the bike lanes. 15th St was plowed yesterday. Inexplicably, the entirety of N. Lynn St. was snow covered curb-to-curb just south of Langston.
Arlington needs to up its game. And the DDOT on Key Bridge (and I assume TR and 14th St are bad too). It’s all well and good to be “committed” to bike infrastructure when it’s all warm and sunshiny, but when the chips are down, it’s no can do…

ParticipantThe bill assigns the “safety stop,” aka Idaho stop, working group to the State Police. Having watched the State Police (and its avid supporters in the GA) oppose reform in motorcycle laws over the years, they are historically very resistant to major changes in traffic laws. They opposed allowing motorcycles riding two abreast for years, but that bill finally made it through the legislature in 2012. Virginia became the 49th state to legalize the practice. Motorcyclists were being charged with reckless driving for pulling up alongside one another at traffic lights.

ParticipantThe Senate passed a substitute bill yesterday, approving riding two abreast and “change lanes to pass.”
Unfortunately the Idaho stop was stripped out, and replaced with a lame provision to convene a “study group.”

ParticipantSo you don’t have to follow the link, the ferry has been sold to the owners of J K Moving.

ParticipantToday is “crossover day,” when each house of the General Assembly takes up bills passed in the other house.
HB 2262, the companion to the bill that failed in the Senate, was referred to the Senate Transportation Committee, effectively killing it and dozens of other house bills.

ParticipantYou still need 20 votes to pass the bill. There are 39 members of the Senate currently. Good luck getting four members to admit they blew it and change their votes.

would they build it that way if it were a car project?
Of course not. Looks like it’s being done to avoid moving (or narrowing) an access road, ever-so-slightly, inside the poop plant.

ParticipantSB1263: “Idaho Stop,” riding two abreast, etc. was defeated yesterday in the state Senate. Vote 16 Y, 22 N. (One not voting, one vacancy.)
Janet Howell (D-Fairfax/Arlington) and Majority Leader Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) were among the “no” votes.

ParticipantNow that the trail detours are finally at an end, on Monday I followed the “official” route of the W&OD for the first time in what seems like years. I noticed missing directional signage at 19th St. N and Tuckahoe on the W&OD. Unless you’re familiar with the area, it could be confusing. There is no signage directing riders through this intersection.

ParticipantLink to the Nov. 23 court ruling in Rockland Farms LLC v. White’s Ferry. A lot more details of the case than what’s being repeated in the media. My guess is the ferry service will return, one way or another.
The ferry has operated under license with the Virginia shore property owner since the 1950s. The origins of the current dispute arose in 2004 when White’s Ferry unilaterally built a new retaining wall and enlarged the area it was using for its operations.

Ok, what I was getting at is that crossing the bridge is tolerable, considering it’ll just be a minute or so of pain. I haven’t ridden along 15 more than just the bridge — what I was recommending was that a rider takes the first right after crossing into VA, followed by a quick left onto Furnace Mountain. That’s a nice, quiet gravel road. On the other side of the bridge, I only have experience to the C&O access point by the MARC station there.
The bridge itself on US 15 is not great, but not horrible either. I definitely avoid 15 south of the Lovettsville Rd. turn off immediately south of the bridge though. No shoulder. Crazy aggressive drivers.
