I discovered at some point that moisturized skin just does better in the cold. So on windy, cold days I’ll put aquaphor on my face and maybe moisturizer on my legs and arms, that really helps somehow to keep in warmth.
Is this enough?

ParticipantThe number one thing to remember is that if you’re not a little chilly during the first mile or so, you may have overdressed and may overheat. Keeping that in mind, I usually keep a fleece in my commuter bag that I can pull on under my outer jacket in case I have a flat, mechanical, etc somewhere where I cannot quickly get out of the wind/weather.
For me, the hardest days to dress for are when the temps are in the 30’s & 40’s and it’s raining. Without a hardshell you’ll get soaked and risk hypothermia, but with a hardshell you will start sweating…then risk hypothermia because you’re soaked in sweat. Figuring out what baselayers work best takes some trial and error, but I think its the biggest factor in keeping warm, but not overheating. I’ve found smartwool works very well for me.
A softshell jacket for days in the teens or single digits is handy, but a good substitute is that hardshell jacket with a fleece jacket underneath. Essentially, turn it into a 3-in-1 jacket. The challenge is finding a cycling specific jacket that is so form fitting that you can fit a fleece under it.
I also have Lake 303’s, however they’re not your only option, the 45North has a few boot offerings that I’ve heard nothing but good things about and honestly, when it’s time to replace my 303’s I’ll probably look at their Wölvhammer boot.
Some will tape over their helmet vent holes, but I’ve found leaving a rain cover on my helmet works very well to close the vent holes, but not trap sweat.

hmmmm. Looks like I only need to make up about 17 seconds to get the KOM. Should be easy.
Shouldn’t be any trouble knocking that out on the commute home
Say hello to Judd while you’re there

ParticipantI watched a kid ride a pretty sweet wheelie down Mass Ave as he went through the intersection at NJ/G/1st St NW on a Spin bike yesterday.
Even more impressive that he wasn’t creamed by either the bus or three cars he cut off while doing said wheelie

Just the messenger:
- No social scoring. It’s inequitable, and a lot of people think it’s downright weird and creepy to the point of being a deal killer. That discussion needs to stop or people will bail.
- Demote the individual leaderboard.
- The team scoring system has to be simple, data based, and transparent. Nobody wants to do advanced math to understand their ranking. (If it’s built into the software, just have a place where it’s explained.)
- Everything else is pointless prizes. Maybe not so many of them that the competition is drowned out by noise.
- The endless agonizing pregame forum “discussion” drives people away every year. It is a primary cause for people who play but don’t have an online presence, and don’t care to meet in person. Even more regular members hope this annual “tradition” dies down and results in minimal changes. It’s NOT a community builder. Disable Steve O’s account for Nov-Dec if necessary. (Sorry. Not.)
- Go ride your bike with people you like. Have a drink. Win. (thanks, americancyclo)
All. Of. This.
Include me in the “please knock off the endless quibbling” camp. I agree with all of Gina’s points about it and despite having registered it seriously has me on the fence about participating. Those threads makes me wish I could block entire threads from my feed.
Add no slackers; you either play or you dont.

Interesting idea. There have been a few times where it would have been nice to have a cargo bike available to rent. From a quick google skim, it looks like there are some of these in existence.
Spinlister is the only bike share app I know if that might have a cargo bike.
It’s not a bad concept, but I could never see listing my bikes for the same reasons I’d never list my truck for rent.

If you ever read The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki, this has a bit of that built into it: no one person has much effect, but the “Crowd” is wiser than even the best experts, and ends up reflecting the optimal outcome.
Just remember there’s truth in the statement that “none of us is as dumb as all of us”
Not to pick on them, but keep in mind people such as Judd, Komorebi, & LSG who I rarely see riding apart from each other will benefit the most from these “social” points.
Think about how fast a team with a few people who already know each other and typically ride together will pull away from teams who start as strangers.

Back when I was a long distance runner, I had to have a physical for grad school. My dad did it. He was an MD. Took my pulse once. Shook his head. Took it again. Shook his head. I said “It’s okay. 48 is normal for runners.”
It rose after I stopped running but it’s back in the 40s again. When I had my colonoscopy, they gave me a shot to raise my heart rate to give the anesthesiologist some margin for error.
I think my best resting HR was 42 during my CC physical in HS…doc was a little alarmed until he remembered why I was there for the physical.
If only I could get it that low again today.

Is there any example other than your personal issues with the current infrastructure?
So far we’ve heard:
Heavy bikes are hard to ride up hills, therefore, Class-3 e-bike panacea.
You are entitled to travel at unsafe speeds on MUTs just like FREDs do, therefore, Class-3 e-bike panacea.
Its difficult to keep up with your racer husband, therefore, Class-3 e-bike panacea.
Riding on surface streets for some portion of your commute is the only way for you to commute by bike, therefore, Class-3 e-bike panacea.
Your friends would totes stop driving cars if they could go 25+ mph on heavy use transportation infra that’s already a mess, therefore, Class-3 e-bike panacea.
What else?
How ’bout you stop advocating for the NorthArl BMW crowd and their $5k e-bikes and instead, continue advocating for better infra?

Seriously, any trip to Philly that does not involve a (properly participating) visit to either Eulogy or Monk’s is a trip wasted in my book. We can see history and bikes here, but, with apologies to Granville Moore’s, great Belgian beer bars are thin on the ground in the DC area.
