In Warrenton by the caboose at 8 for pictures!!!
The rides start at 0900, 0930, and 1000 depending on length. No way am I going to get there 0800 for pictures
Maybe 0845. Maybe.
Valerie is going to drive out with me and mosey around Old Town Warrenton while I ride. Since there’s only so much moseying to be done in Warrenton I’m going to be riding the short ride (18 miles).

ParticipantWhat length are people thinking of riding? This year’s routes are 18, 49, and 64 miles. I miss the 30-ish mile option they had in previous years

Did Pete live in Arlington, and if not would that be an issue for the Arlington Board? After all, Bikenetic is in Falls Church city.
Arlington keeps trying to name things including schools and roads after the Lovings, who were not Arlington residents and whose family wants no part of it besides – so Arlington residency is apparently not a requirement. Recent naming trends in the county have highlighted civil rights and abolitionist trailblazers.

ParticipantNot to burst any bubbles, but anyone who states that there is only one possible choice for the name of this bridge is engaging in either hyperbole or myopia. Arlington is a county of 200,000+ people, at least some of whom may have other ideas about who most deserves this kind of honor. Of course, sometimes the early bird gets the worm, so maybe the bike community can grab naming rights before anyone else does.

You mean kitten-like meat, right?

I met a few folks on a recent ride who mentioned the bike Arlington team costume group directly and was speculating on the group costume this year. Made me think that Hello Kitty & friends may not be as well known as other years. Any thoughts on how we could make this more Hello Kitty-ish?
There’s my fifteen minutes of fame right there
I’ve been puzzling how to differentiate being dressed as Badtz-Maru from just being dressed as a penguin. One option I thought of was to wear a t-shirt of the character, which would explain who I’m supposed to be but would make it a worse emulation of the character, since Badtz-Maru doesn’t wear a t-shirt with his own picture on it.

ParticipantIt looks like they’ve changed the routes this year. The options are 18, 49 or 64 miles. That’s too bad – I thought the 32 mile length was just about right for a leisurely cycling + beer + food day.

ParticipantI already have a Badtz Maru sticker on one of my bikes, so that’s who I would go with.

ParticipantArlington and Alexandria are both reasonable places to stay and generally less expensive to stay in than DC itself. They are not monolithic – Arlington is 26 square miles (70 km2); Alexandria is slightly smaller. “Rosslyn” and “Crystal City”, referred to by previous posters, are neighborhoods in Arlington adjacent to the Potomac River, and therefore near DC. Likewise, “Old Town” is the historic neighborhood of Alexandria adjacent to the river.
My feeling is that Rosslyn would be a good bet. As Serdar pointed out, you can travel by bus directly from Dulles (IAD) to Rosslyn (I don’t know about bringing bikes on that bus). While the restaurants in Rosslyn tend to be fast casual, catering to the office lunch crowd, there are a few bars – and it’s an easy walk from Rosslyn across Key Bridge into Georgetown. Crystal City would be a little farther from the places you want in DC, but still an easy bike ride there, and there is some nightlife there. Old Town Alexandria would place you the farthest from the parts of DC of interest, but has a quaint feel and liveliness of its own.
There are bike trails connecting all these areas. Here’s a link to local bike maps. All except Georgetown have Metro stops as well.
Sadly, in both DC and NYC, bike theft is an issue. Bring a good lock! Or two. Arlington and Alexandria are somewhat safer in that regard.
Last, I assume you are targeting the 2022 Five Boro Bike Tour. Alas, May 2021 has come and gone.

ParticipantThis thread pushed me over the brink and I finally bought a Da Brim. I walked into the living room wearing it just now, and my wife burst out laughing uncontrollably. Not a good sign in terms of the dorkiness factor.

ParticipantI have a skullcap similar to this which protects my shiny little head from the sun – though I do notice a comfort difference with the thing blocking the airflow through the helmet – nice in the cooler weather, not so nice in the summer. I recently purchased a similar skullcap that has a schmatteh hanging down in the back (more commonly known as a “neck drape”) to add neck protection. I keep meaning to order a Da Brim, but never get around to it. My next-door neighbor swears by it.
Of course, wearing a kipah has its advantages too, as it’s one less thing to pack when you bike to shul. The Bucharian style provides the biggest area of sun protection.
