ParticipantFrom the Chicago Tribute: Dockless bike and scooter sharing promises convenience but delivers chaos
I don’t normally read the Chicago papers but the writer is an old friend of mine. As part of her research for the article I suggested that she read through this thread.

By the way, I take it Swedish meatballs are, as a general rule, made with flour/breadcrumbs etc? #yupthisagainsorry #SaturdayNightandYouWon’tHearAboutItAgainForAYear
The copycat recipes I’ve found online, in addition to chametz-based binders, use a combination of beef, pork and milk or cream.

Saw and chatted with Coach OneEighth down at Thompson’s Boat Center working with his Yorktown HS crew team. I was proud of him for walking around in his bike shoes. STRADDLING BOTH WORLDS.
Ideally, you leave the shoes clipped onto the bike and lace into them once you’re on the saddle.

Another reason to do the short ride. REI is apparently offering free coffee to members that morning from 9 to noon. I can probably ride in, drink the coffee, and still roll out in time for the short ride. The free coffee will be important to make me feel better about not drinking beer #TeamLastDayOfPassover #NoChametzInTheBlueberrySoupRight?
I’m in for the Halvvasan 30 miler.
Plus, being Reform I observe only seven days of Passover, so I’ll drink LOTM’s share of beer. Before you judge me, explain why you’re riding on שבת :p

It sounds like my best plan for groceries is to hire Wheels&Wings to do all of my shopping.

I buy our groceries by bike and carry them in my knapsack. But it’s only for me and two girls and my mom … I think boys eat more.
A recent photo on Strava shows the petite W&W towering over the other members of the family – so yeah, I’m guessing they’re not going through a ton of food.

ParticipantI think I could tow my kayak by bike as far as Columbia Island, but any farther than that requires a car. Even then, careful route planning would be required – I don’t think I could negotiate the Spout Run corkscrew on the Custis with a 17 ft boat behind me.

I get that everyone is judging the woman. From the video, it seems like it was very dark out and she picked a horrible place to cross. But as has been mentioned, this is a video, and it may not have been so dark out. This may be a spot that people cross at all the time. There doesn’t seem to be another car on the road, and she made it across 2 other wide lanes of traffic. If the Uber-car had braked just a bit a while back or just changed lanes, she would have been fine. It is entirely possible that people cross there all the time, and just expect that the one car on the road will brake a little, or change lanes, or do whatever possible to avoid the collision.
It’s also possible that it was this dark out, and she’s the only one who crosses there. I just don’t think we know enough to know it’s her fault.
Whether the video looks dark or not is somewhat immaterial, as the sensors in self-driving cars see differently than we do. In addition to the visual spectrum they use both passive light outside the visual spectrum (IR) and active LIDAR (and sometimes other spectrum). Given that she was a pretty good sensor target with little background clutter, I suspect this was an algorithmic failure rather than a sensor failure (“the car saw something but didn’t react to it” rather than “the car didn’t see it”). A sober, alert human driver paying attention would have done better. But an imperfect human driver – someone texting while driving or my son driving home at 10 PM (which is the time of the accident) after a 14 hour shift at the hospital? Maybe not.
This is a tragic outcome, but I wouldn’t write off “self-driving cars” as a whole because this particular prototype did poorly compared with what an ideal human driver would have done.

ParticipantI feel the call should be made in the AM, by which point it should be more certain as to how significant a snowfall this will be.
Freezing Saddles is not just for the DC residents and a handful of badasses. We should hold the happy hour when people when people who live in the ‘burbs and/or don’t own studded tires can safely make it there and home.
I agree with SteveO that the aforementioned badasses should feel free to gather at Bier Baron tomorrow even if the HH is postponed. Further, I encourage SteveO to devise an alternate scoring system that takes into account how many final happy hours you attended
