ParticipantAs long as it’s the bike and not the rider….

ParticipantAssuming my arm grows back and my hearing returns and you promise to only blow that damn vuvuzela in my “bad” ear, I’d like to test out my bike’s Christmas lights climbing hills in the dark at near freezing temps, sounds fun, or like what passes for fun in my life. Either night works for me. I’ll pray for blizzard conditions :p

Participanteminva – You are much more of a lady than I’ll ever be. If some idiot jumped out of his car and told me it was worth $50,000+ I’d sneer and reply, “Huh, I would have never guessed.”
I think you were smart and rational, your reaction kept things from escalating. Also, because I know you I can imagine quite clearly how cooperative and friendly your were. I bet he felt ashamed. All kidding aside, I’m glad you are safe and glad you kept your head.

ParticipantI had never seen a cyclo-cross race before. Here’s what I learned.
1. Don’t try to take Dirt’s vuvuzela away from him.
2. The mud pit with ankle deep mud so thick and disgusting that many chains were dropped and at least one spoke was broken — they like it that way.
3. The man dressed up like a pig handing out prizes to the riders during the race — absolutely normal.
4. The hill that went straight up for 75 yards, (yeah, seriously) — the racers ran up the hill either pushing or carrying their bikes and then at the top where any regular person would collapse and ask for a beer, they ran alongside their bikes then threw themselves onto the saddle without looking. I believe it’s called a Leap of Faith for more than one reason.
5. The ambulance standing by wasn’t there for decoration.
6. At the beginning of the course there were several barriers that the racers dismounted their bikes to leap over and then repeated the Leap O’ Faith maneuver.
7. Assuming they survived these obstacles their reward was — another lap.
8. Winners in the various categories received Fat Tire Beer. It’s beginning to make sense to me now.It was quite something.

ParticipantI had one set of lights left when I spotted a man getting off from work and getting ready to ride his bike in the back parking lot of Flippin’ Pizza in Falls Church. I must have made quite an impression as I jogged across the lot waving the lights over my head and yelling, “Hey, I got free lights for your bike.” I think I startled him. Anyway, once I showed him how they worked and snapped them on his bike he said, “Thanks, you made my weekend. I really needed those.”
So that you too can run across parking lots accosting strange men, a reminder of the bike lights give away coming up on Monday:
When: Monday December 12th
Where: At the W&OD and Custis Trail near Bon Air Park

ParticipantWhat Jan told me tonight is that he leads a mountain bike ride at Wakefield on Tuesdays, it’s no drop but not a social ride. The time, I don’t know, I’m sure someone else here on the forum does. It sounds like a lot fun.

ParticipantJan – I know your big grand opening is tomorrow but I’m dropping by today for snow tires.
I also want to ask about your Tuesday night rides.
And just to remind folks, Bikenetic is located within sight of the W&OD:

ParticipantIt is an unexpected jewel. Part of me wants to stay quiet and not promote the Cross County Trail, but that would be wrong.
This is the link to an interactive map of the trail.
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/cct/cctoverviewmap.htmYou’d think it would be simple enough and impossible to get lost on, but there are lots of little off-shoots and I have ended up in places I did not expect, like the rear parking lot of Home Depot at Fairfax Circle or at an odd crossing with Arlington Blvd (Route 50). But that’s half the fun, or so I tell myself.
Happy Trails,

ParticipantWait! Whispering creepily into ears is my best move. What’s left?
Agreed. I hate that intersection. There are too many moving parts, and not just mine. It is foolish to blow through there.
