ParticipantDust off your cow bell. Get ready to watch some serious local cyclocross racing at its best.
Here’s the information on the race: http://thebikelane.com/about/2011-capital-cross-classic-pg750.htm
My plan is to be there in time to watch the Women’s (Noon), Masters 1/2/3 (1pm), Men’s 3/4 (2pm) and Men’s 1/2/3 (3pm).
Here is the whole schedule: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=14437
The race venue is approximately 1 mile from the W&OD. The trail is a mellow mountain biking trail. It isn’t technical, but it would be best traversed on a cross bike. It is certainly rideable on a road bike, but it would be more fun with fatter tires. I’ll probably ride my cyclocross bike.
My guess is that 4 hours of cross racing might be too much for some. I’ll lead a group from Lake Fairfax back to the W&OD at around 2pm and let them make their way home on their own from there.
What to bring:
- Cloths to keep you warm off the bike.
- Snack food to eat while watching the racing.
- Money to buy yourself a new winter hat
- Your cowbell. If you don’t have one, there’s time to get one before Sunday. If you don’t want to buy one, this probably isn’t the event for you.
- You’ll need at least flashy lights if you’re staying into the afternoon. Sunset is early these days.
We’ll ride from East Falls Church Metro at 10:30am on Sunday morning. Meet by the Kiss and Ride. (Kissing is Optional).
We’ll ride through Vienna at about 11am. If we’ve got time, we may stop for a cup of coffee at Cafe Amouri in Vienna. This ride is more about watching racing than actually racing. We’ll go at a casual pace that is inclusive. The ride is just short of 15 miles each way.
This ride will happen rain, snow, ice or shine. If the weather is bad, make sure you have not only what it takes to get there, but what it takes to be comfortable for watching the races. If the weather is bad, we’ll likely only stay for a few of the races.
Please let me know if you’re interested in joining. I’ll need to know how many people to wait for.
Talk to you soon.
Pete

ParticipantI’m racing Cat 4 early in the morning, I was planning on sticking around to catch some of the afternoon events. See you there!

ParticipantI think those vuvuzelas from the Arlington Fun Ride need to be put to good use, esp. while Skreaminquadz and/or Culimerc are racing! Anyone else we should know about?
(A confession here as well — I didn’t take one of the vuvuzelas from the Fun Ride and might not be able to make it to the races, but I’ll be rooting for our racers nevertheless.)

ParticipantGood luck, Skreaminquadz.
Have fun y’all. I can’t ride with you, but, just maybe I can take my daughter to see some racing in the morning.November 29, 2011 at 1:26 am #933059eminva
ParticipantI went to the DC Cyclocross race last month and if you have the time, I would recommend that you go because it’s a great spectator sport. Very interesting and entertaining, and fun atmosphere.
I will not be able to join you this time — will be on a pool deck at a swim meet again. Have fun and good luck skreaminquadz!

I’m in that race too. I’ll be the one attacking out the back.

Hahahahahahha… Just what SQ needs…. someone blasting him off his bike while he’s trying to negotiate the barriers.

ParticipantIf you order now, you’ve got JUST enough time to receive this in time for the races this weekend.

ParticipantDirt, is this the off-road trail you plan to take from the WOD? http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5206580
I’ve never been on this section and want to double check if this can be done on a road bike, thanks

I’d suggest at least riding that on a cross bike. I’ve ridden that a dozen times… usually with at least 700x28c tires. I’ve ridden with people who pinch flatted very easily on 23mm roadie tires.
Actually I wasn’t going to take that route Lake Fairfax. I was thinking of going in from the behind the ice arena. I was gonna go scout it out on Sunday morning.

ParticipantLooking forward to seeing y’all tomorrow. Should be a great day. I have my vuvuzela and cow bell ready. It really isn’t a cow bell.. it is too small for that. It is more like a goat bell…. maybe a pygmy goat bell. It still makes lots of noise.
