The fair-weather brigade has been getting into breathtaking shenanigans on Capitol Hill this week! Between them and Cop Week, I’ve never wanted a GoPro more in my life.

It’s probably the Police Unity Tour. Don’t know why they called it a protest.
Maybe a group of DC residents is protesting law enforcement agencies’ annual mardi gras, where they act like they’re confused about (1) their jurisdiction having ended several states ago and (2) DC’s open container laws, noise ordinances, and intoxicated driving laws applying to them!
I used to live behind Kelly’s Irish Times and every year their bacchanal overlapped with my final exams. You haven’t really plumbed the depths of humanity’s capacity for rage until you’ve been woken up by bagpipes at 3AM and had MPD dispatch tell you there was nothing that could be done.
I also had an extremely unpleasant interaction last year with a motorcyclist from Pittsburgh who was awfully sure that because his bike still had working blue lights attached to it that he was allowed to cork traffic for an unpermitted parade through my neighborhood. This all comes to mind because this morning a few visitors from NJ flashed their lights as they made an illegal U on Penn Ave. Sure I was well over a block away, but still, DC residents already have to put up with too many overlapping law enforcement agencies to be expected to tolerate that crap.
This borderline-unhinged rant brought to you by Righteous IndignationTM. Righteous IndignationTM, because being correct and being a jerk aren’t mutually exclusive!

ParticipantWhatever you do, don’t try strapping a (very, very illegal!) cellphone jammer to your bike. The FCC has agents monitoring this forum, since cyclists are such notorious scofflaws!

ParticipantI have a take-off black alloy cross fork from a Lemond Poprad that she’s welcome too. It’s 1-1/8″, 700c, and should have plenty of steerer tube available for a small bike. The crown is drilled, and so may take road calipers, but it was designed for cantis.

ParticipantCrossing 15th circa 10:45 this morning on my way to a meeting at the Treasury I saw a dude riding an amazing bike. It was a 1996/1997 Litespeed Unicoi that looked perfectly preserved. Exactly like mine when I built it up way back then, right down to the Cane Creek WAM wheels and the leaky blue RockShox SID fork.
Whoever you are Litespeed dude, I hope you’re having a blast on that awesome frame!

ParticipantI haven’t attended this event in prior years. It’s now two weekends away and I’m sure everyone has decided what they’re going to ride and registered, right?
So what should a non-racer sign-up for? From the pictures the Grand Prix looked like it was pretty competitive. Assume I’m just a recreational rider who, over a long winter, has reached their goal descending weight.

Senior Counsel, FCCAww, you’re going to make me be serious on the internet. Obviously this was terribly ill-considered on the part of this Florida man (not NY as I noted above). No one should ever interfere with the ability of the public to communicate, particularly given the potential need of someone in the vicinity to contact emergency services. I’m actually quite glad to hear that it’s possible to find and prosecute people who would endanger others this way.
But I ask you, if we can’t have a little chuckle over the terribly ill-considered things people in Florida get themselves arrested for doing, is the internet even worth having (also assume there are no cat videos)?

interfering with licensed frequencies is, and should be, a serious matter. the guy is a jerk and should get hit by the full fine. hopefully there will be a lot of publicity so people understand that they can get caught and that there is a penalty.
Well, sure. I mean, I guess, if you’re hung-up on being “reasonable.” I, however, am not so burdened. American patriots like this guy, the inventor of the Brompton, and Lawnchair Larry are what will ultimately solve our transportation crisis.
On another note, this guy made it two years using his jammer. How long do you think I would last trying to do this past both the Capitol and the White House before getting slide-tackled by a Crown Vic?

ParticipantI really like my Cycle Lumenator and get lots of compliments on its brightness (1,000 lumens!). It has an internal DC-DC converter and so can be hooked directly into almost any ebike battery.
It’s really cool to have your lights all just come on when you turn the system’s key. I don’t know what kind of DC output jack BionX uses, but it wouldn’t be hard to rewire the light’s cord if the included plug (a 5.5×2.1mm DC power jack) isn’t right.
If you go for it, I do recommend mounting it low so as not to blind trail users.

ParticipantOur car is used so infrequently it’s completely irrational and uneconomical to keep it in the city. It’s six years old and has fewer than 15K miles on it. And most of those are highway runs to my parents in NC.
We last filled up in mid-December and still have over half a tank left.
I think a car share membership will be the way to go when this thing finally dies (if it ever does).

What size Acme did you need? We have some in stock and some arriving this week. We try to keep an example of all sizes in either the Acme or Ajax version for testing. We’d also be happy to do a full commuter package with fenders, racks, and dynamo system (if you would like).
Glad to see y’all on the board. I love your shop!

ParticipantThanks! I had actually run across your review of the FM145/166 via google. Small world! I’ve been thinking of doing a very similar build but would really like to spring for hydraulic brakes and Di2. I think it’ll be a few seasons before the tech has settled down to an acceptable price point and worked out any kinks. Hopefully by then I’ll have worn out something significant on the Lemond and can easily justify it!

My most recent bike purchase was my disc-brake road bike project that started last fall and wrapped up late winter. It took awhile to find (and afford) the parts I wanted, build the wheels, decide what stickers to put on it, etc.

I am thinking of putting 1.8″ tires on it (or 42mm rear, 1.8″ front) and racing it in MTB field at Wakefield this year.Is this an open mold frame? It looks fantastic! I’ve been considering building up a disc brake road or cross bike based on an open mold frame and would love any input you might have.
