Does anyone have any comments on this route? Any suggestions for a better way?
I’d ride Columbia Pike and not the sidewalk, but I understand those who prefer not to — especially with those two new traffic lights which are all screwed up. (That stretch of the Pike has been part of my commute for at least a dozen years, although westbound in the afternoon and eastbound in the morning.)
If you are going to come up Columbia Pike, in the morning, take S Courthouse to 2nd Street South and make a left. Make a right on Old Glebe (at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School sign) and pop up to Rt 50 and cross Glebe.
Heading home, take the sidewalk to Glebe Rd and make a right. Make a right on 1st Rd S, a left on S Oakland, and left on 2nd St S. Cross Glebe at the light and head to S Courthouse Rd. This sounds a lot more complicated and longer than it really is — it’s normally quicker than making a right no Glebe and left on 2nd or crossing Glebe to get to Old Glebe.
(Actually, from S Courthouse and Columbia Pike, I’d take Courthouse, then 8th St, then Walter Reed, then 7th St, then Highland, then 6th St, then Irving, then 2nd St; but that’s more out of habit than anything else.)

If it was yesterday I was in work clothes (dress shirt, sharkskin pants) so that wasn’t me. Besides, I’m usually the guy that vocally calls out the ELITE needledicks that don’t call their passes and do dumb sheeit like passing up the middle. I also look not too dissimilar from this so I’m pretty easy to identify:
You carry a bottle of Lipton Iced Tea instead of a water bottle?

:pThe trails are just as empty when it’s 100F out as when it’s 35F.
Okay, then let’s make it 20F! :p
Luckily, at 3:00 a.m., the temperature doesn’t make much difference on the number of people out on the trails….

ParticipantI’m probably the only one looking forward to the days when the high temperature is around 35 degrees. Not just because I like the cold, but it does drive some people inside. (Luckily, just about everyone sleeps late, so I do have a solitary commute in the mornings.)

By the way, does the sailboat in the background come with the bike for that second mortgage?
:p
Yeah, but the mast and sails are extra.

Columbia Pike remains a difficult route for cyclists, including the eastern end. No change in that situation in the near future.
Actually, it may be changing for the worse. Right now, you can avoid part of that section of Columbia Pike by using Southgate Road. At some point, the land swap will transfer that to Arlington National Cemetery. If that’s before any improvements are made to Columbia Pike, it will be worse than it is now.

Why do you think they were joking?

ParticipantAre you even allowed to run without earphones anymore. I can’t recall the last runner I’ve seen without them. Anyway, when in doubt. slow down and speak up. It doesn’t always work, but slowing down will cause less of a delay than hitting them.

ParticipantYou don’t need a new route, you just need to pass them before 7:00 a.m., which is when they both open. (7-Eleven is the only place I pass that’s open and, for some reason, I have never been tempted to stop for a Big Bite in the morning.)

That said – one of the reasons that I prefer the parking lot is that people in cars backing/pulling out are *looking* for others in the parking lot.
I still have a faint scar from where my chain ring sliced my right ankle because a woman simply backed out of a parking space without looking and we collided.
Also, whenever I go through that parking lot on a commute home there are cars.
