I’m going to be in northern Finland mid-September – I had no idea they were so bike friendly and now I’m TOTALLY getting a bike while I’m there (so I can say I biked in the Arctic Circle).

My commuter, a Litespeed ebike which I’ve dubbed The Embarrassment of Riches, just got a big spring makeover. More pictures are up on Flickr and a complete description is up here.

I finally decided that the black on black on black thing was getting old. Plus racing requires white bar tape, as we all know. :)

The only way I’ll excuse the road discs is because you’re running carbon wheels, but that is a fine looking velocipede. Fine looking indeed.

Road disc FTW! I will never own another rim-brake bike (unless maybe a vintage build or something). I love riding this bike.

Please explain the logic here. Or the emotion, if that’s more accurate.

    It seems I’m always outdated.

Because apart from disc brakes, the best way to stop carbon wheels is to do a fred flintstone.

(I only slightly jest. It turns out that carbon doesn’t generate a lot of friction. If it heats up too much it melts. In order to combat the melting problem you use special pads which generate even less friction. It’s enough to make you retrogrouchy.)

Don’t worry black is never out of style. I have just been running the all black road bike for awhile and figured I would change it up. A little.

I don’t see the point. Discs are heavier, less aero, more expensive, more complex, and just as likely to cook the brakes on a downhill as rim brakes (and slower to come back if you do cook them). As someone who’s been burned (literally) by a disc rotor before I’d also like to not repeat that. The benefits are better initial bite, much better modulation than rim brakes, if you’re running carbon wheels you’ll get better braking all around, more impervious to mud and weather, and there’s no chance of blowing out a tube or a tubular from heat built up in the rim. Looking at the pros and cons I see no reason to run discs on the road or for CX.

They have their place on MTBs, definitely, but that’s it for me.

Oooh, I didn’t realize I had copied you. Well, hopefully you take this as imitation is flattery; I know of no one with more aesthetically pleasing builds. I didn’t do the gumwalls, but after seeing yours in person, I agree that it looks fantastic. That is the sort of style confidence/insight I lack; my best bet is just to copy what someone else has shown to work :)
