ParticipantNew stem/drop bars came in, so I’m testing on my FG. I’m not jazzed about the black stem with chrome spacers, but since this is (hopefully) temporary, I can deal. Also, I ordered a 3T stem, having forgotten that Clovis had swapped out the factory 3T stem on my Cervelo for a shorter Deda that he had in his parts bin. I never really liked that my bars and seatpost on the Cervelo were 3T, but the stem was a Deda…so first thing I did when the new stem came in today was throw it on my Cervelo, then move the old Deda to my FG. Worked out pretty well!

You get a nice symmetry with the chrome seatpost, though, which seems very artistic to me. Don’t be too hasty to change that up.

ParticipantHey, I finally have something to add here!
New long tail cargo bike. We had a mountain bike that had been largely abandoned by all members of the family. It was transformed with the Xtracycle Free Radical kit.
To be used as a grocery getter AND to allow my son to get himself and his electric bass to and from music lessons and rehearsals, which are just three or four blocks away (but always involved a car trip up to now).
Other uses TBD. Come check it out at Vienna Thursday Coffee Club tomorrow.
Thanks to Bikenetic for answering my multitude of questions over the last few months and for setting it up.

I agree. Silver accent up front balances post, crank, rims.

ParticipantSpring cleaning! Washed everything! Degreased grease! Also, new tire (to replace the one that got a big chunk out of it last night in the slush) and new CHAIN!

All it needs now is new brakes. Thinking the Kool Stop salmon pads would look pretty punk against the black everything else…

I don’t always use brakes, but when I do, I prefer Kool Stops

ParticipantJust had a pair of brake pads literally dissolve on me during Saturday’s rain.
I think I have converted to the religion of disc brakes. My frame is build for either, so I could just crazy glue a pair on. Maybe then my brakes would last longer than a week?

After burning up some brakes a few months ago, I’ve taken to being more conscientious about cleaning my rims, and I’ve also been considering braking technique. I don’t brake less, necessarily, but I listen to my brakes constantly, and I’ve found they make a lot of different sounds depending on the conditions. If they’re quiet, I know they’re in good shape; if they hiss a lot I pump them a little to see if I can clear them; if there’s a grinding sound, I know I need to go easy on them till I can clear them one way or another (within the parameters of stopping safely and as required, of course). I’ve just been making all these ideas up as I go, but it seems to have spared the current set of pads more than the last set. I do need to work on adjusting the alignment of the pads in the calipers as they wear; that’s my next challenge.

I don’t have a lot of data on the rim-brake side, but *depending on the brake pads* you can certainly get a lot of life out of disc brake pads. My rear pads finally wore out on my BB7s after about 10k miles. I replaced my front pads at around 6k/7k miles, if I remember right. (And I replaced the stock Avid pads with “extreme weather” pads which generally last longer, but are also louder.)

I wasn’t
Not that it was an impulse “OMG look at that price purchase”, natch – I’m not rich – but I was itching for a speedylicious bike since February, and had almost narrowed it down to the Colossal, a Habanero custom, and the Rivendell Roadeo. Then I saw this for 45% off, and the decision was very abruptly made for me.
I took it out for a bit of a putz-about in the parking lot last night. It just…. goes.
