    1/12/2023 The ’30s

The 1930s were dominated in the US (and in some other parts of the world) by the great Depression.

There are many standard ways of dealing with depression. Stimulative fiscal policy. Relaxed monetary policy. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and other meds. Talk therapy (there are newer approaches, but I’m old fashioned, I’m into cognitive-behavioral therapy). Getting exercise and being outdoors (so, like, riding a bicycle) can help sometimes.

There are less helpful things people try. Isolating oneself. Raising tariff barriers.

Pictured here is a naturally occurring SSRI.

If anyone here finds that their gross domestic product is suddenly dropping and there is inadequate aggregate demand, let me know. #destigmatizingthebusinesscycle

Week 3 Scavenger Hunt: National Days!

Rock on with those decades! This will be a tough week to judge.

Here are the topics for next week, a mix of national days, some major remembrances, some just silly.

1/14/23 Saturday National Dress Up Your Pet Day — Show us an animal (real, fake, imaginary, whatever, just NOT YOUR OWN) in clothes!
1/15/23 Sunday National Hat Day — Photograph a fun hat
1/16/23 Monday Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Show something related to the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
1/17/23 Tuesday Prohibition Begins, 1920-1933 — Interpret as you wish
1/18/23 Wednesday National Winnie the Pooh Day (happy birthday A.A. Milne, 1882) — Photograph someone or something you might find in Pooh’s Hundred Acre Woods
1/19/23 Thursday National Popcorn Day — Pop pop pop pop popcorn!
1/20/23 Friday National Cheese Lovers Day — Cheesy cheese pictures, please!

Please remember to find your subjects on your ride. Items/people/costumes brought from home may not count on their own, but they can continue be used to enhance photos of whatever you found. Clear as mud? Ride on!

    1/12/2023: the 30s

In 1935, the government purchased land for President Franklin Roosevelt’s first planned green town, Greenbelt, MD. On my bike today I visited historic Turner Cemetery, which was one of three family cemeteries existing on the farms that were purchased and, as the placard said, where the other cemeteries’ occupants were consolidated.

While I took a picture of that placard, and also visited the New Deal Cafe, I decided that this photo of Franklin and Eleanor would represent the 30s for this day.

The repeal of Prohibition in the United States was accomplished with the passage of the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 5, 1933. We would not have ABC stores if the Prohibition was not repealed.

That’s a great photo and memory, Jessica. But I am sorry to remind you that you need to find an item on your ride. You cannot bring it from home.

Rule 11. Let’s stick to things you find out there during your ride, not things you bring or make yourself (unless otherwise specified).

Please, delete #scavhunt from your Strava post on Jan 9. Unfortunately, I cannot give you a participation point on this day.

The Lockkeeper’s House, built in the 1830s, is the oldest structure on The National Mall, and was the terminus of a water canal along the northern boundary of The Mall that connected eastward to the Anacostia River and linked to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. President Washington hoped the District would be a major port, but it was not to be. The city canal was filled in in the 1870s and became Constitution Ave.
