Columbia Records released the first long-playing microgroove record, spinning at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute and holding about 23 minutes each side in June 1948. The 12-inch became the standard format for commercial recordings, ushering in a new musical unit of consumption — the album.

Also in March 1949, 7-inch records were introduced by RCA Victor. This smaller format was more compact and had a shorter running time. The new 45 rpm held two songs, one on each side. For more info https://www.grunge.com/818876/the-origin-of-the-7-inch-record/

The 29 Diner opened its doors in 1947 and has been a fixture in Fairfax City ever since. It was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1992. A fire closed the diner in November 2021. It is still planning on reopening, but I can find anything on a date. In addition to their good food, they are also known for their support and service to the needy in our community.

This row of homes in Arlington was built during the 1940s as military housing for nearby Fort Myer.

Perhaps the darkest legacy of the 1940s dominated by war, The Holocaust , was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its allies and collaborators. #NeverAgain

There is a good chance that at some point in your life, you lusted after the Jeep. However, do you know where the Jeep originated? Only designed in 18 hours, by Karl Probst, the first prototype for the military Jeep was beloved by the military in 1940.

My neighborhood went up in the mid 40s too, on the GI bill. Every other house was built in 46, all identical colonials. The next year houses facing the other way (mirror image) were built in between them. Mine’s a 46, kitchen pointing NE towards the w&od, facing my next door neighbor’s kitchen, driveways side by side.
Never thought I’d live in a cookie cutter neighborhood – but the people aren’t cookie cutter, and the location can’t be beat – 0.3 miles from the intersection of the Custis & w&od trails [emoji3]
