That was my thought as well. Until that point, if it ever happens, it will be “a nice scenic overlook for I-66”, according to my walking partner.

Well it’s now March 2021 – the presumed month in which the Lee Highway W&OD bridge, and nearby surface trail improvements, are due to open.

Has anyone been out that way recently, and can they report as to the status? I haven’t seen anything from VDOT about it.

There are some photos from Dec 2020 at the bottom of this page:

I am not sure if it’s open or not, as I didn’t go there in recent months.

I can say that as of Tuesday morning, 3/2/21, it still wasn’t open. However, it is close. They look to be finishing up the fencing on the rails to keep people from falling off the bridge. Not sure if it will be this week or this month given the pace of everything, but it is really close.

It looks close. The overpass bridge is surfaced and the pavement striped. They were installing the fencing on the side rails on Wednesday. The lighting on the bridge may be the little circles low on the railing posts?

I drove by the other night and the bridge lighting was operational.

In DC developments: construction begins next week on protected bike lanes on K Street between 1st NE and 7th NW. Installation is expected to be wrapped up by the end of the month. This will add an important east-west connection between the MBT/1st NE protected cycletrack and Mount Vernon Square, and hopefully lead to more connections (Mayor-willing) as the protected network is built out…

While not as impressive or impactful as the new W&OD trail bridge, College Park recently installed a nice, little bridge along the Trolley Trail. It’s at the intersection of Beechwood Road & Rhode Island Avenue and improves connection for nearby residents and makes it a little easier for cyclists to get around on side streets when the trail is busy. 64f9fee3ba780bd5197aeadd2d73f0ab.jpg4ad0e28fa35bf8578bf52c15fc80c254.jpg

I noticed a couple of improvements this weekend in the College Park area.

They regraded/resurfaced/smoothed out the CSX underpass near Lake Artemesia.

They haven’t finished restriping the road, but they seem to have improved the Rhode Island Avenue crossing at Greenbelt Road (you can more easily use the crosswalk to cross and reconnect with the Trolley Trail).

Rode the brand new PBLs on 17th Street NW yesterday. As a fan of BOTH PBLs, and of “streeteries” I was impressed at how they had been integrated on the blocks from P to R Streets. The curbits protect the bike lanes, and also make the streeteries permanent.

The PBL on the southside of Potomac from S Cap to 1st Street SE (which has replaced the paint only door zone bike lane) was very nice, and ties into the PBL on the east side of 1st St SE

I went right from 1st Street on to Quander Street. No seg bike infra, but its very calm bikeable street (and breaks up the old super block) Of course if you take that instead of N Street, you don’t end up at Tingey, but at the big plaza south of USDOT.

Installation has started on the extension of the 15th NW PBL from Pennsylvania down to the mall (and eventually to the 14th Street bridge). Striping work is done between Pennsylvania and Constitution, but protection hasn’t yet been installed, so it’s not very usable yet. But soon!

The North bound traffic lanes are open.

    The sidewalk/bikelane(?) is not open.
It is at road level with no curb.
