Unfortunately, paving will only be done from West Spring Street to West Monroe Avenue. Details on Alexandria’s paving projects can be found at http://www.alexandriava.gov/tes/info/default.aspx?id=2822
Thanks for the URL. The Pavement Condition Index map (PDF) linked from that page clearly and accurately IMO shows the northernmost stretch of Commonwealth as being worse than any section they’re planning to repave. It might be worth contacting the City and asking to prioritize repaving that stretch. I expect it’s low priority because of lower motor vehicle traffic levels which of course is ironic since it’s motor vehicles that tear the streets up, and that are best equipped to handle bad roadways.

ParticipantI rode on Commonwealth Ave today, and I have good news: they repaved from West Spring Street to West Monroe Avenue, and the pavement is silky smooth. The lines haven’t been painted yet, but there is a faded center line. It was very pleasant to bike on

Here is photographic evidence of the smooth pavement.
Just past Monroe (southbound)

ParticipantLooks like the Rt 1 widening by Ft. Belvoir has begun and allegedly includes some bike path We’ll see what comes of it, but it explains VDOT’s revision of the Rt 1 bike corridor.

ParticipantOn a related good note, relatively speaking, I was doing some route planning and research for a possible bike camping trip to Pohick Bay with toddler in trailer for this summer. Not surprisingly the Ft Belvoir clusterf^&k was the weak link in the chain as far as safe routing goes, but recently updated VDOT (and other) info sources seem to indicate that the Mulligan Rd connection from Rte. 1/Mt Vernon Hwy to Telegraph Rd is slated to acually/finally open in June. It adds a couple miles to the journey but w/o it, I’d have to risk a still unimproved Indianapolis Motor Speedway, er, I mean, Route 1 w/ my 2 y.o. in a trailer… not something I’d likely be willing to do.

In addition to the bike lanes, the project will also include a multi-use path on the southbound side. The schedule indicates that the project won’t be completed until February 2016. Project website

Thanks for the link, I hadn’t seen that one yet. Looking at it, I realize there is a decent sized mup and on-road lanes. I will interested to see the usage on those on-road lanes because it’s a fairly high speed portion of Rt 1. The only sad part is the continued belief that every cyclist must divert down to the MVT from that point forward, totally eclipsing any ability to really utilize the commercial corridor there. But maybe the stark contrast once it’s complete will convince VDOT to at least connect the sidewalks from there to Huntington.

Yah, there is about a 0.01% chance, but if I nag on VDOT/state legislators/county supervisor enough, maybe one day they’ll at least get the curb cut built into the one little section by the Holiday Inn. Progress marked by the feet, no inches,
.

GuestI know, supposedly Fairfax County recognizes Rt1 as a pedestrian death trap and would like to do something about that before killing too terribly many more people, and I suppose I sort of believe there are plans in the works for this, I just don’t have much hope for major improvements while I am still young and mobile enough to be a pedestrian.

ParticipantUpdate on the trail improvements coming from the VDOT Route 50 / 10th St / North Courthouse Rd interchange project from Arlington’s PoC:
The portion of the trail between 10th Street and Courthouse Road (on the north side of Arlington Blvd) is complete minus a missing handrail and should be open soon. The portion of the trail under Courthouse Road will not be completed until the end of May when the new ramp from WB Arlington Blvd onto Courthouse Road is reopened. Additionally, the portion of the trail from the Courthouse Road Bridge to Rolfe Street should also be completed in late May.
Finally, the new trail located on the south side of Arlington Blvd from N. Pershing Drive to Rolfe/Queen Street should be completed in July. Progress on this trail has been slow but I am still hopeful VDOT will meet their mid-2014 deadline.

Here are a couple of photos of the new westbound lanes. There is still more work to be done.
