“Blossom,” by Wayne Healy, at the corner of Park Road and S. Stonestreet Avenue, Rockville

This one is not only an example of Black culture, but an example of how Black culture is erased. Here’s a description I found elsewhere on the forum:

Sculpture, titled “Blossom” by Wayne Healy is located on near the the Rockville Metro on the east side. Called “origami… made in steel” by the artist, images depict the historically Black neighborhood of Lincoln Park, Clarence “Pint” Isreal, a Negro League baseball player who has a park named after him and William Gibbs. In 1936, Gibbs volunteered to become the NAACP’s plaintiff against the Montgomery County, Maryland School Board for pay equity discrimination in a case that would be known as Gibbs v. Broome.

And here’s the City of Rockville’s description:

Blossom by Wayne Healy | installed at Corner of Park Road and S. Stonestreet Avenue, 2012

    Description:

The sculpture consists of laser cut silhouettes of the different activities of the people in the neighborhood. The past and present Rockville residents are depicted on the tiles.

Note that all references to Black people have been removed.

“Cornerstone,” corner of N. Washington Street and Beall Avenue, Rockville.

The City of Rockville did rather better with this one:

Cornerstone by William Cochran | installed at Corner of N. Washington Street and Beall Avenue, 2010. Trompe l’oeil civil rights mural depicts three central banners with historical text that include the “X” marks of illiterate freedmen on a pledge to pay for Rockville’s first black school. The artwork also highlights African American heritage sites through historic images that appear to hang in front of the mural.

Sorry @serdar but memorials & monuments are subjects of a different pointless prize (#monuments) and excluded from this year’s #publicartfinder … but you can still recycle your photo on the #monuments thread.

On today’s (long enough) ride, I managed to find one of the “Art in Bloom” pieces from last year’s Cherry Blossom Festival. “Celebration” by Sandra Pérez-Ramos, despite what the website says, can be found on 13th Place NW just south of Fern Street, along the entry driveway to the Children’s National Research and Innovation Campus (NW portion of Walter Reed).

2/20 – A DC Go-go mural painted last April on a market at the corner of Alabama and Randall SE. (Someone started “encouraging” me to go back to my own neighborhood so I did not get a good picture with my bike in frame. Sorry!)

As a bonus: here’s a brief video of part of the painting in progress https://youtu.be/N9kdiChXLQc 2c70b1b803a29e2fedc20621db7ca4ea.jpg

I suspect this column in front of Bloomingdale’s in Chevy Chase is a fountain in more seasonable weather. But I was not so subtly being moved along by a police officer, so I didn’t want to stay too long to check. For now, it’s just a column with a decorative base.
