Black History Month

I’ve ridden past this many times, but today was the first time I stopped to take a closer look at the mural. This is painted on the side of the Park View Recreation Center on Otis Place NW just off of Warder in DC.

The mural is more than 10 years old, but was touched up/tweaked a few years ago. The mural highlights luminaries such as Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Frederick Douglass.

Statue of a figure climbing a rock, located near the front door of Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences – 2401 Colts Neck Rd, Reston, VA. I couldn’t find out who the artist was or if the sculpture has an official name.

#publicartfinder – “Bridges” by Mike Mandel, a tile mosaic on the side of the house at 525 N 3rd St on the Greater Richmond Convention Center complex.

There’s a dearth of Black History Art here…but tons of murals really capturing the heart and soul of this city. Here are four panels in one work done by Jesus “CIMI” Alvarado, a well known Chicano muralist and activist. They are on the walls of the police station in 5 Points, an area that used to be really seedy but has been slowly improving. I probably wouldn’t ride alone around there at night, but for daytime, it was a beautiful day to see these pieces.
