Ok so the tool isn’t new….I’m a little late on this one. But if Arlington did monitor it, then we could get stuff done. Right? Right??

The Courthouse Farmer’s Market/antique market has some used bikes for sale that are reasonable. It’s set up right near the Courthouse plaza, across from CVS.

According to an email I got today from Arlington sports, there are supposed to be some Team Sabre jerseys available at Revolution Cycles on Clarendon in Arlington (and can you still get the Bike Arlington jersey there?).

Yes you can still get the BikeArlington jerseys at Revolution Cycles. If they don’t have your size we’ll make sure to stock ’em up!

I have not been on a bike in something like 20 years. I need advice on where to start over. Obviously, I need a bike – but what kind? I plan to use the bike for errands, biking to work meetings, and biking to Nationals Park for games. I may take some longer rides, too. I am 5’10” and could lose a few pounds. :( I like in DC, right across the street from the back of the GWU Hospital.

Besides the bike, I know I need a helmet — but what else? Are saddles designed for women worth it?

If you can refer me to a website or a book that answers these questions, that would be great.
    !

First off, congrats for making the decision to get back on the bike!

Second – everyone has already provided some great advice which goes to show that this forum is a great resource. But for some more personal and detailed information I would highly recommend our (BikeArlington) Two Wheel Tuesdays get togethers that we hold in Arlington. I know you live in DC, but this month the sessions are taking place in Courthouse which isn’t too far from Foggy Bottom.

Our TWT sessions cover 3 main topics – all of which you have asked about. The main topic is riding in traffic safely and confidently. We discuss lane and intersection positioning, avoiding crashes, and the rules of the road to name a few. Our second topic is Equipment, Clothing & Gear where we feature a local bike shop representative to answer all of your questions about bike selection, bike fit, equipment and tools for your bike, maintenance, as well as a fix a flat tutorial. The last topic is called Routes and Directions where we bring in a local and experienced rider to help you map out your trips by bike.

Our Two Wheel Safety tips session is tonight – check our website for our full schedule and locations. We will continue the classes into the fall, but they will all be in Arlington. I hope you can make it to one of these – sounds like they will answer all of your questions and get you back on two wheels!

Best of luck to you! :)

If Zanna can join us, we could also celebrate her successful completion of the Climate Ride. Not that we need excuses!

I would love to come but I’m leaving tonight for New York. And no, I’m not planning on biking back from NYC on my own :p But I did have an absolutely amazing experience on the ride so I’ll be doing it again next year for sure!

Have fun at happy hour tonight! :)

Yup, it’s Tuesday again. Tonight our special guest is ME! I’ll be talking about riding in traffic and anything else you want me to talk about! After a successful[ish] BikeDC event we want people to also to ride their bikes when there are cars in the roads. And it’s obviously important to know what to look out for, so we’re hoping to build confidence in those people who feel uneasy about it!

Feel free to attend and share your knowledge and experience from the roads as well. It was nice to see a familiar face at TWT a couple weeks ago (KLizotte)!!

I don’t think so. What I think I heard them say this morning was that there would be some kind of raffle.

I actually spoke to Joe with the BID a few weeks ago and he did say that they will be giving away jerseys to everyone who rides everyday during bike to work week and checks in at the table.

If you are an REI member, wait until Friday when you can use your 20% coupon. Or, use the coupon to buy something else there that you covet but haven’t yet found an excuse to buy for full price.

Thanks for the helpful advice but I leave for my ride on Friday and tomorrow is the only day I can do it. I’ll remember next time not to leave these things to the last minute…

I use a camping ‘pack towel’ such as these:

THANKS for this recommendation. I’m getting ready for the Climate Ride – 5 days of riding, a couple days of camping, and very little space for items like a large cotton towel. I am heading to REI tomorrow and will be purchasing said towel.

    Bumping this one.

Zanna is within grasp of meeting her goal for the Climate Ride. She is riding for all of us and we need to help her meet that goal.

Her Climate Ride fundraising page is

    http://bike.climateride.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&eventID=505&participantID=1507

    Please support her!

The finale is May 23. You can join the riders in Silver Spring. Details are at http://www.climateride.org/blog/washington-dc-finale-bike-rally

Thanks so much for the support and the shout out Dana! I really appreciate it.

Yes – I am indeed very close to the fundraising goal and I WILL reach it! Tomorrow night I am hosting a silent auction where you can bid on some great items (6 month membership to Arganica, New Belgium swag, designer sunglasses, restaurant gift cards, and more!) and the money will all go to my ride (which in turn goes to WABA).

The event is at Mellow Mushroom and goes from 6pm – 8pm (their happy hour ends at 7pm) and we’ll be on the second floor. I will have a couple pizzas there to lure in anyone who loves pizza as much as I do (especially free pizza). I also want to reiterate the finale on May 23. Check Dana’s link – it will be quite a sight, so hopefully some of you can make it! :)

Spread the word, bring your friends, family, babies, pets, whoever (actually, you might not be able to bring pets, so scratch that)!

    Thanks! <3

TWT continues the month of May but will now be at the Courthouse Plaza! Tomorrow we’ll be discussing urban riding and safe cycling tips. Advice and insight from experienced riders is always appreciated!

We’ll be giving away a gift certificate for dinner and a movie to one lucky person…

it reminds me that most people are smarter than I am.

I was reminded of this the first time I rode 50 miles, by myself, on streets I’ve never ridden before, no padded shorts, and fully stocked with…wait for it…one water bottle and no food. Hanging out with people like Tim Kelley and Chris Eatough makes you think that anything under 100 miles is short. So I figured, 50 miles isn’t long distance, I don’t need food or water! Luckily half way through I stumbled across a Giant and picked up two clif bars, ate one and neglected to refill my water bottle. Needless to say I ate about two Tim Kelley sized portions of pasta that night and probably equal portions of water.

And I lied, I am reminded of this constantly (people being smarter than me that is).
