Was Key cleared?
I just took Key Bridge downstream side-path a few minutes ago. It was in good shape…you can ride on actual pavement much of the way, and what remains of the compacted snow is pretty ride-able too. I was surprised that the path was in such great shape.
Yesterday Key was one of the most difficult segments of my commute, requiring every single muscle in my body and more just to stay upright on the icy snow.Today Key + Custis = easy riding. It’s the other parts that remain a bit dicey.

Post your BMI on this page, then ride throughout the winter, then reweigh yourself on or after March 15th and recalculate your BMI. Those with the greatest drop will win the side bet.
You don’t wanna know. Let’s just say, some of us had better recuse ourselves from this challenge.

In a few weeks, in the most miserable part of winter, you can probably assume most crazy peopl….er…riders you see are BAFS participants.
Hmm. Perhaps, though my impression was that there are lots of folks who bicycle commute year ‘round without being plugged into BA or other social networks. It’s just a reliable, cheap and happy way to get places. This is my first year doing FS but I’ve been riding nearly every day for close to a decade. Surely I was not the only lone wolf out there? In any case I’m delighted to make your acquaintance and join the flock :+) .

ParticipantI was wondering, is there some way Freezing Saddles riders can make themselves identifiable (to each other) on the roads?
This afternoon my daughters and I (two of us on mountain bikes, my younger girl in the Burley) rode the Arlington Loop, the HP Circle of Cycles, and some coffee-neering detours. If we had seen any fellow FS riders, we would have given you chocolate chip cookies. But we didn’t see anyone we recognized. Hains Point was pretty desolate aside from a single peloton from FreshBikes (many hidden behind masks) and there were few other cyclists.
We were thinking, wouldn’t it be great if there were some small way riders could indicate their participation in Freezing Saddles… like tie a red ribbon on their handlebars or something? Has this been done in past years? It would be fun to exchange a friendly wave, say hi, or distribute treats to hungry cyclists. :+)

ParticipantI’m likely to be at BB around 7:30 a.m. If no other cyclists appear, I’ll just pick up some treats and head to the office. (I don’t have a stash of days off to burn ’cause I’m in the non-governmental sector.)

ParticipantThe guy’s an avid cyclist and birdwatcher. He’s had a few accidents… fractured shoulder, collarbone, ribs…punctured lung… but he keeps on pedaling. The man is brilliant. His mind races at 100 mph and you can’t miss a word, because he’s already speeding ahead to his next thought. I was lucky enough to have him as my professor.

SWEET! “I’ll have what he’s having,” so to speak, obliterated leg muscles and all. :+)

ParticipantI love the icicle bicycle. It’s beautiful and it captures well what FS is all about.

Participantum… I like them, but at the same time I wonder, do they look phallic or is it just me?
Not that I mind. :+)
Maybe it would be safer to do something like a picture of a pretty red bike (profile) with icicles/snowflakes superimposed, if anyone knows how to photoshop.wheelswings

Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie includes injera in his diet.
I’m not sure you can be Ethiopian and not consume njera. It is a staple there. Years back, I lived in a shantytown with Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees (I was working in Africa), and we ate njera at every meal, every day. We also drank canned sodas at every meal, as these were considered healthful – as in, they wouldn’t make you sick. When you purchased your soda, the vendor would ask if you wanted it warm or chilled. It was considered absurd to drink a cold one for breakfast.

ParticipantThe new Native Foods Café at 1216 West Broad St. (on the east side of street, near the Giant) in Falls Church is just a block from the W&OD – you get off the trail where it crosses the pedestrian bridge over W Broad. https://www.nativefoods.com/locations/locations/falls-church
It’s a fun excursion for vegans and vegetarians or for anyone who likes healthy food. The restaurant opened in mid-December. The portions are large, the prices are reasonable (all the dishes are under $10), and the place is informal/biker-friendly. We were there for Christmas Eve dinner, but I’m thinking it would make a good spot to refuel after a long ride on the W&OD.
I see that this Hot Eats, Cool Treats thread has a lot of talk about BBQ, tacos, and tongue. This place is just about the polar opposite… funky mixtures of kale, seitan, sweet potatoes, avocados, and so on. Delicious.wheelswings

If I ride there in my tights will they let me sit on the furniture? I’m not allowed to at home after a ride.
Huh? Um…. you must have really nice furniture. You can sit on mine anytime. :+)

So my grandmother was a grandmother at 37 (middle aged?).
Holy smokes, that’s young to become a grandma. The average age to start grandmothering in this country is between 47 and 50 (depending on which source you believe). I guess some of us will be “above average” when we get there.

ParticipantI’ve ranted before about Ninja Cars — but driving Ninja-style while texting?? I yelled at the car but the windows were shut tight and the lady was too absorbed in her texts and her music to notice me. I intersected with a second Ninja Car just a few minutes ago, and I yelled at that one even louder, to no avail …though the pedestrians watched with interest…
Does anyone have any tricks for getting Ninja drivers’ attention? My batting average is not so good. -
