My concern with e-bikes is always the person who creates a bike at home that can go 30mph+…

Has anyone encountered the dude with the electric-powered skateboard? Last year I saw him several times along the W&OD between Hunter Mill and Vienna (haven’t seen him this year). One time I was riding up the grade toward Vienna at about 18 mph and he overtook me at about 25 mph.

His skateboard looked similar to this: Electric skateboard

Fogging of cycling glasses – a lot of new cold weather riders get perplexed by this issue and, like I once did, wonder if there are products to prevent it. Glasses generally do not fog up while you’re underway, but then will when you come to a stop.

The solution is incredibly easy and does not require buying anything. When your glasses fog up, just push them down your nose about an inch and leave them there until a couple of seconds after you are underway and moving and they will be clear again. It’s that simple.

You could also try dishsoap before you head out into the cold. Use a drop (no water) and smear a thin film over the whole lens on both sides. Wipe clean with a soft cloth.

And, of course, on my way home today I passed a guy on a bike carrying golf clubs on his back.

He don’t care ’bout no golf vs. bike controversy.

I used to do that in junior high school. Biked to the local municipal golf course, played 18 holes, and biked back home.

Interesting… I wonder if they would help alleviate my hip and lower back pain.

Anybody know if the paving work is finished on USGS Drive in Reston between Sunrise Valley Dr and Pinecrest Rd? It was all torn up about 10 days ago.

Several times this summer I’ve seen a guy doing cyclocross training at Idylwood Park around the soccer field. He brings his own portable barriers made of pvc pipe and practices dismounting, carrying/running with his bike over the barriers, and remounting.

His name is Barry Martin and his interview with Jackie Benson is on NBC4’s web site: http://www.nbcwashington.com/

Basically he said his alternative was to fight rush-hour traffic and driving rain on Connecticut Ave, and he thought it was safer to just wade through the water on Beach Drive to get home.

Was out walking the dog this morning and encountered the W&OD snow blower at the shelter just west of mile 9.5.

Conditions on W&OD at mile 9.5 on Feb 16 at noon (between Gallows and Cedar Lane). There is a 12-inch wide path of hard pack. Didn’t see any evidence of bicycle tires, cross-country skiers, or Dog-sled Guy along this stretch of trail.

I’ve encountered dogsled guy twice at Idylwood Park earlier this year, once in January and once in February. We have a very dog-reactive dog. I take him to Idylwood Park every weekday morning for a 1.5-mile walk because of the wide open space where it is easy to avoid other dogs.

Upon seeing the three huskies running in our general direction, my dog went bezerk and started lunging and barking. Of course, this caused the huskies to veer off dogsled guy’s intended path and head directly at us. Now we have three barking huskies in addition to my barking Chinook. Yikes! Fortunately, dogsled guy was able to jump off his bike-sled and quickly gain control of his dogs.

On Thanksgiving morning, the day after roadrunner was bitten, there was a Fairfax County Animal Control van parked in the lot at Idylwood Park. I wonder if they were waiting for dogsled guy to ride through.
