    Ok I think I saw:

    Dana going up Ohio Drive? around 5:30pm
    Dasgeh westbound crossing Lynn St? around 5:55pm (I’ve never met you but I thought I recognized something on your bike.)
    Dickie eastbound crossing the Custis bridge over Spout Run around 6:00pm

    It still rains 1 of out 10 times when there’s a 10% chance.

    Oooh White Castle. So much better than Krystal – although I did visit the one in Bristol, VA.

    Generally, as long as I don’t feel really tired, it’s a joy to get on the bike and just pedal off. Having a GPS and actually logging miles motivates me because I like seeing maps/data, and I also have slight hoarder/OCD tendencies – every new bike ride is an addition. 😮 I’m still also amazed at how easy and cheap it is to get miles out of a bicycle.

    Most weekdays, having to get to my office on means either driving, metro, cycling or a combination thereof and there’s really no contest. It’s motivation enough knowing I get to ride in to start and finish my work day. Something else that really helps is having quite a lot of route options to get home so I can mix up the riding.

    Another motivation is of course health/sport. I’ve been never terribly athletic and definitely not built for rugby or anything like that – but cycling fits my body type quite well, and doesn’t jar my knees like cross-country running did. So the fact I can push myself and get positive feedback mentally and physically helps a lot as well.

    It’s also great that maybe a couple times a month I’ll run into someone else I know on my ride. Never did that in the car.

    The abort/retry/fail? days are when something feels really wrong, like a sharp knee pain, etc. Something that could be made worse by riding on.

    I sure don’t do “thousands of miles a week” (talk to Dirt, Vvill, Ccrew and Consular Rider for that)

    Honoured, but I’m not in their league. I have been doing more lately but it’s not going to last, and is definitely atypical for me. A normal week for me is around 100miles commuting and maybe 50mi at most recreational/sport. Last year I had less than 1500mi (I don’t actually know – never kept mileage records until mid last year).

    I definitely agree with all the points made though, from having a social aspect, a prep routine (I also line my stuff up the night before, including sometimes, a banana), ramping up your miles gradually, getting rest days/sleep, etc.

    Of all the kickstarter projects for bike lights, this was the most impressive/promising, I thought. Should be on the market soon:

    Very true. I like to think I’m a safe and considerate trail user but I did a couple of boneheaded moves yesterday (although there were no visible reactions from anyone) – tried to be better today. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.

    Oh, that was last weekend – I can’t this coming Sunday! I did my W&OD ride (and ended up running into Liz anyway).

    But I think I shall be seeing you this Saturday anyway. :)

    This is what I see. Not a browser issue (tried in 3 different ones).

    Mind blown.

    At 5 secs in this video you can see there is the “NATIONAL/LOCAL” link. But I don’t get that. I just have “NATIONAL/”. I can only assume that when you sign up you are added to a local area or something but for many of us, it didn’t happen.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMR2mNkdyic

    The only other clue I have is from http://www.endomondo.com/campaign/national/faqs where it says in one answer: “Please go to your local challenge site, if applicable.” Apparently, I am not applicable. :D

    If you try this URL
    http://www.endomondo.com/campaign/national?view=#### and change #### to various numbers you can see some of the local views.
    e.g.
    940 = Atlanta Bicycle Coalition
    948 = Iowa Bicycle Coalition
    954 = Maryland
    968 = NJ Bike & Walk Coalition
    971 = New York Bicycling Coalition
    976 = Ohio
    980 = Bike Pittsburgh
    1008 = Georgia Bikes
    1021 = Vermont
    1025 = Kaw Valley Bicycle Club

    I couldn’t find a DC or VA local page.

    You can then see a local leaderboard with a similar query string:
    http://www.endomondo.com/campaign/national/leaderboard?view=976

    Unfortunately, I actually have no idea what Dana (or others) are seeing. Actually it looks like when you are on a local page, you can sign up for the challenge through it (assuming you are signed out of endomondo first). I haven’t tried it though.

    My second/newer OnGuard is super “sticky” like that. It sometimes takes over a minute of fidgeting to get it to turn. What I found works best is actually pulling the 2 pieces apart just a little. Somehow it was manufactured so if you push it in all the way it’s not right.

    My original OnGuard is fine as long as the U is pushed in all the way.

    How did you recharge your Garmin enroute?

    Just checked the full period, local riders leaderboard. Based on what I can see:

    Kathy Lewis is 7, Megan Jones 8, Amy Adler 12, Zanna Worzella 17 and Kathy Lizotte is 23

    I may have missed some but it seems the system doesn’t know much about where we are!

    The data seems to be different at the communities level

    Go figure!

    Ok, what’s the difference between the “local” and “communities” level? Maybe that’s the source of the confusion. I don’t see anything labelled “local”.

    Hmmm . . . For Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, I am seeing myself at #10 on the August leaderboard (no other women) and me at #21 for the entire period as the first woman. What are others seeing? This is weird.

    Liz

    P.S. EDIT: I have 4211 points/2114 miles.

    I see the same as you for WASHINGTON-ARLINGTON-ALEXANDRIA, DC-VA-MD-WV
    712 riders.
    4276661 citizens.

    Maybe arlingtonrider meant just VA as opposed to the “Communities” leaderboard?

    Anyway, just do a W&OD + back on August 31 and you’ll crack the top 20. :D

    Sweet. I like the clean look of those fenders, love the saddle, and the disc brakes will be awesome in the wet.

    Great to see you too! I think I actually saw you the first time when I was heading down the opposite direction to the start of the W&OD (but wasn’t sure it was you). I don’t usually carry anything with camera capability so no danger panda for us :(
