ParticipantOne of these days I’ll take a pic of my reflective/hi-vis gear, tape, etc. I have a few things in bright orange.
The only thing is I don’t have much on my actual bikes. I’m tempted to turn my spare wheels (Aksiums that came stock on my bike) into more reflective ones with some 3M tape/etc.

ParticipantAgreed (to the last 2 posts).

Oh. My. Gawd….they cleaned that bike with WD-40.
Yeah I saw that but it’s a bike specific WD-40 product, I think.

ParticipantI’d ride any bike like that if I had those skills.

ParticipantI got a Garmin Edge 500 in late Feb, but was tracking most my rides since August or so last year using a car GPS in my back pocket.
So this is a bit over 14 months. It’s missing what I managed of last year’s Kill Bill.

Ugh! I haven’t ridden ALL WEEK and now I’m missing Coffee Club!
Dislike! It was a big crowd today too.

ParticipantI find myself agreeing with those that say it’s a ridiculous enforcement and fine, considering what sort of behaviors (vehicle, bike, etc.) one witnesses on a daily basis in and around DC. The officer saying “it’s for your safety” (paraphrasing from original post) is particularly irksome. It’d be more palatable if the officer said “Gotcha! Easy money.” and rubbed their hands together.
At the same time, I do watch myself whenever I see any sort of police officer or vehicle. I don’t agree with all the laws but if there’s a possibility of enforcement I will be extra careful.

ParticipantSaw Dirt this afternoon on the W&OD going the opposite way. I wasn’t wearing any sunglasses though so I blinked a couple of times, and then he was gone.

ParticipantOn disc vs canti:
with cantis, i can move a road bike wheelset over to use the bike as a road bike
with discs, assuming i get one with a 135mm rear dropout frame (or a 132.5mm or steel frame i guess), i can possibly move a 29er wheelset over. altho depending on hub width the disc calipers may need some adjustment.Discs are heavier but have no rim wear issues. They seemed fairly easy to setup on my MTB but on road bikes with a shorter throw they don’t seem as great. I’ve never used cantis.

thx gc, i just signed up for rookies race because i’m a chicken – only riding a SSCX because that’s what i’ve got. see you and will on race day!
Yeah I did “day of”. Since you ride fixie most of the time I think you’ll be fine on a SS CX. See ya there!

Tell me the day/time you guys are racing
21 Oct. Cat 4 men’s race is 8:15am, Rookie Race (men/women combined) is 4:15pm. There’s races all the way in between those times. And the tandem race follows: https://www.bikereg.com/Net/17400

My problem exactly, although somewhat opposite. I usually end up in a situation where the lever bottoms out before I braking force. Not ideal…
I get this problem on my folder which has road levers and mini v-brakes. Not ideal especially when I often use the bike as my wet weather bike. I (think I) noticed Dirt has one of those “problem solvers” on one of his bikes with discs. http://problemsolversbike.com/products/travel_agents

rookie mangle with a huge variety of speeds and competence.
Sounds like a regular commute on the trails.
I definitely didn’t want to be on a course with 100+ cat3/4 road riders. Especially if I’m not on a CX bike.

ParticipantI just signed up for the DC CX rookie race aka CAT6.
I’m tossing up between riding a heavy rusty MTB, a too-big hybrid and buying a CX bike (which I’ve wanted for commuting for a while anyway).
With a new CX bike I can’t decide between disc and cantilever brake models. Choices! First-world problems!

ParticipantI heard two “hey Will”s (I think) within 2 minutes this morning on the W&OD but didn’t identify either rider! I was still waking up, sorry.

If you’d read: I never said that 2.35s fit a road bike, they are the best commuter tire for my current rig and anyone out there than can handle a 26X2.0 or larger IMO. I then went on to write what I recommend for a roadie commuter, and finally I wrote what I recommend for a clincher tire on a race bike.
Maybe we don’t see too many bikes that handle 2.35s because they are on the wrong commuter bikes… :p Once you put function over form, things change dramatically… it’s taken me 15 years and dozens of personal bike builds, on top of all the builds in the shop, to come to my own take on what what really works, and what doesn’t for: commuting, fun-rides, family-rides, touring, club-rides, racing, endurance (randonneuring and brevets: see rusa.org), single-track, CX, and downhill. Each requires its own tools, and tires are simply another tool.
Yep, I read your posts. I’ve had good experiences with Vittorias as well. I was just saying there aren’t a ton of people on bikes like that.
I know what you’re saying. A bit after a year of commuting on my road bike I found myself wanting to ride a more dedicated commuter bike. Suddenly my older clunkier bikes seemed like great commuter options again. But not everyone has space/budget for a bike in every bike category. My road bike is still going to be my most efficient and lightest bike (and until recently the only one that cost more than $300 new), so there isn’t a good reason for me to buy a bike and put 2.35 tires on it. My commute is most of my riding miles and most days I enjoy a more “sporty” ride (and I have ELITE brand bottle cages). That said, I have read about Big Apples before and I’m sure they are comfortable, have relatively low rolling resistance, etc.
