As a corollary, when someone forgets to cover their bright headlight, as any human is prone to doing, shining your equally bright helmet light into their eyes out of … revenge? … is not the appropriate response.

I think the helmet lights are the bigger problem, even at lower lumens levels because they are at eye level. They seem more common this season, and I am encountering many cyclists with both a helmet and handlebar light. They politely cover the handlebar light, but the helmet light remains exposed, shining right into my eyes (dammit!).

I guess I don’t get why people think they need so much light, espcially on the trail. I use a Mako 200 lumens light and it provides way more visibility than I need for my aging eyes.

This situation is the only time I will pass a school bus with its flashers/stop sign on. When the operator of the school bus signals to me that I may pass through, I will wave in thanks (this is visible to other people who may not have seen the driver’s signal to me) and proceed slowly and cautiously past. The rest of the time, I stop and wait. I have not been in a situation where I was in a rush, but would walk on the sidewalk as a last resort.

Yup, ditto for me. I always stop for school buses unless the driver waves me through, and I’ve only had that happen after the driver has pulled in his/her stop sign and turned off the blinkers.

I can’t imagine parking/locking my bike in a location without taking off everything that is grab and go in a second or so: lights, wedge bag, etc. I’d only leave that stuff on my bike if the bike was going to remain within my sight the entire time. But if I’m parking to go to work, and won’t be back for 8 hours…no way I’d leave that stuff on. I don’t think you can reasonably expect the parking garage to ensure nothing happens to those accessories, either (sad as it is to say that).

I’m sorry your things were taken, but I think you have to take those things with you.

I was covered by dozens and dozens of bugs when I got home. I assume most were dead; none were moving. Face, head, chest, even down to my belly (sweat carried them there?), covered with bugs. I noticed that as I passed through the Crystal City Connector onto the MVT that it was solid bugs for a couple hundred yards, so I suppose most of them rode the final 21 miles home with me. Damn freeloaders…

Bugs. A 21.4 mile long cauldron of bugs, constantly bouncing off of every part of my body, DARING me to open my mouth just once to gulp some air on an ascent.

Oh, I thought this thread would be about the Kansas City Royals, but I see instead it is about teams that won’t win.

It took a while for me to get my July pair. Have faith; it will come.
I got an email yesterday telling me that they did not have my size and would I take an inferior prize instead (inferior meaning they offered me Bronze and Silver prizes, even though the shorts were Gold). I suggested they offer me a jersey. We’ll see what they say.

I got an email yesterday, too! They said they were out of shorts in my size, but would I like some socks or a magnet? I think I’ll follow your strategy and ask for a jersey. I could really use another long-sleeve jersey.

A portent of things to come…leaving at 5:45am, I had to run a light the entire way into work. Psychologically, I’m not quite ready for that yet.

Wow, two pairs of shorts for Steve? One pair for All-Star Robert Cox.

Of course, if they don’t actually send me the shorts, have I really won anything? I’m going to have to follow up on this tomorrow. I responded to their email and verified address info, but nothing has been delivered to my door.

Absolutely gorgeous. Best time of year for riding is the next six weeks or so IMHO.

This is also when you start to get a sense for who is still going to riding to work come winter. People like me in shorts and a tee shirt, definitely. People in thin tights and light jackets maybe. Those who are already in heavier coats and fleece ear warmers on, doubtful. (BTW, how do those people not sweat to death? I got sweaty in a short sleeve tee? I’d have lost a gallon in sweat and been drenched from head to toe like a wrestler trying to make weight if I wore that much stuff…)

It also depends on what time you head out. I left at 5:45 when it was still dark and 45 degrees. I wanted leg warmers, long sleeves and liner gloves. But as the sun came up so did the temperature (also because I was headed east towards the city) and I didn’t need the extra length and gloves.

It sucked…I rode the Metro home and left my bike in my office. My hips (arthritis) and left quad (muscle strain or some such thing…I was playing kickball yesterday and as I cut my quad grabbed). I can push through the arthritis, but this afternoon I tried to cross my legs and couldn’t lift my left leg over my right.

Yes, this morning was amazing. I was feeling quite blah after losing a debate EARLY this morning about whether our son is allowed to climb out of his crib and come into our room. Finally got on the bike, got on the trail, and felt awesome.

This is what I do, and honestly, I don’t think it looks any dorkier than the long pants on their own (I wear running capris or tights) or just padded bike shorts.

I have a pair of knee warmers that I used on Monday and this morning. They actually span from my ankle to mid-thigh, so my entire leg gets covered without having two layers from mid-thigh up. Added bonus is that if I start to feel warm I can peel them off in seconds and stow them away.

Does anyone know what the cop was doing on the WOD at Wilson Blvd about 5 pm today? His squad car was parked there, too…on the trail, and not on the street.

For my hands I have a pair of lobster gloves that I cannot praise highly enough. They keep my hands very warm, even in the teens. Using these gloves, my hands get cold only if my body gets too warm and my hands start to sweat.

Yup, I ran into that yesterday, but it didn’t seem the milling grooves are as deep as they sometimes can be, so I was able to ride on it ok.

and now they’ve come in with the deeper milling grooves which are an anathema to skinny road tires…so back to MVT for that final mile in to Crystal City for the next week or so.
