As someone who put up a mediocre 1,173 points last year and is now going to be going in with a six month old – generally speaking – would anyone be excited to have me on their team? I can do any team meetup as long as its at Caboose off the W&O or any place in the Mosaic District. I’m super flexible. Swear.

Seriously – I’m looking for a general idea of if I’d meet the bar for “good teammate” or if it’s better for me to sit it out this year.

no, don’t sit out. You’re just like everyone else…you do what you can.

I don’t know that class 3 distinction is of great importance. Seems to me that speed limits are the real hangup for e-bike advocates, and 20mph (class 2) is still faster than 90% of trail traffic. I think that establishing even modest limits on trails — say, 15mph limits during peak weekend and commuting hours – would really dampen the market for ebikes. I think most people will obey speed limits even if they can’t be enforced, because they understand they exist for public safety reasons. I also think that they would therefore think twice about spending $2,000 on a bike that they can’t in good conscience take above 15mph. If you’re able bodied and in reasonably good shape, it’s not that hard to go 12-14mph, which gives the ebike an edge of just a few mph. Speed sells.

If I go 55 on the beltway (posted speed limit) I get blow away by virtually every other driver. So why do you think that mentality wouldn’t carryover to a speed limit on the trails? Public safety reasons? In a better world, maybe, but this ain’t it. I think the only thing that would keep most from surpassing a posted speed limit on the trails is the limits imposed by their own quads.

This is an amazing thread. After carefully reading all of the posts I decided to order a pair of Specialized Roubaix Pro 2BR tires for routine commuting on my new cyclocross bike, that is, until the snow starts flying.

I typically wave those cars through. I don’t want anyone to do me a favor. I want everybody to do what they have the legal right to do. The car beats me to the 4-way stop on Van Buren…I wave them through. In doing this I’m also thinking about the Predictable component of PAL. If everybody acts predictably we should all be safe.

I could see a case for eventually banning carbon fiber road bikes from the section of the MVT between the 4MRT and the 14th Street bridge. I suspect that having LE distinguish carbon fiber from other road bikes would be even harder than having them distinguish different classes of electric bikes. ;)

    GTFO!

But then, there’s plenty of roads to get to the same place.

Microsurfacing sucks as it regards riding a bike. It leaves the road surface rough and jolting if rolling with skinny tires. Shirlington Road used to be a fun, fast ride north to south, but now, not so much.

There is already a 15MPH speed limit on the MVT, at all times.

    Hmmmm.

If it’s not enforced (which it’s not) then it doesn’t really exist.

I live in Bowie, MD.. but work in Washington, DC. So Im in DC almost everyday of the week. I dont mind traveling a little bit to get the best service for the money. More than anything I just a shop to go over the bike, get it running like new again and not try to upsell me on bunch of unnecessary stuff. The bike was fine as is on day 1.. and should be fine as is on day 900.. with the proper TLC and service. I’m pretty much open to any shop in DC or off the 495 beltway.

I actually bought the bike from Spokes in Alexandria, VA. But feel weary returning there for service as their quoted price for service is $120!!!!! But I believe the services they list.. are the ones that my bike will need after 3 years of ownership and weekly rides.

    http://spokesetc.com/about/service-repair-center-pg1155.htm

    Deluxe Tune-Up Package – $120*
    *Parts are additional

Recommended in your owner’s manual, this package covers the periodic maintenance necessary to keep your bike in excellent riding condition based on normal usage. This package includes adjustments to all of the major systems, including:

Shifting system – derailleur and cable’s adjusted and lubed
Braking system – brake, brake pads and cable’s adjusted and lubed
Wheel system – hub adjustments, true and tension spokes
Tires – inspect for wear, properly adjust air pressure
    Steering system – headset adjustment
    Bottom Bracket – adjustment
Chain – inspected, wiped down and lubed

So, you haven’t serviced your bike for 3 years and see a quote for $120 to provide the maintenance you need. That averages out to $40 per year for maintenance. Honestly, what are you complaining about?

Core strenghtening really does help. Its solved 99% of my back issues. I used to have back aches on my bike after 25 miles. Now its closer to 90-100 for me to feel pain, if I even do on a ride. Also when your back hurts, see if you can stop for a minute and stretch out. That can help solve the immediate problem.

Keep in mind if you stick to a good core routine, you still may wait a few weeks to see results. So dont give up. Be patient, and hopepully it’ll get better soon.

I wholeheartedly endorse the stop and stretch idea. For me, 20 seconds of stretching makes fairly intense pain disappear. I can usually do this at a stoplight and not have to otherwise interrupt my ride.

Look forward to seeing it on the trail! — Looks like you’re already getting it dirty.

Once you get a bit comfortable on it, you should totally ride through CCT + Lake Fairfax on the way to/from work. I could ride out early and meet you, though these days that would probably be too early for daylight (maybe a bit better after time shifts back?). Exploring those trails in the dark probably isn’t the best idea.

Haha…that’s my yard. My house and backyard abut Lake Fairfax Park…the trails are right behind me. Yes, we should definitely meet up some morning when the light is more forgiving. I’m going to ride this to work on Tuesday.

So, finally,a cyclocross bike. It’s a Trek X02, 2010 variety. It’s in great shape, essentially new components. Shimano 105 drivetrain but for the Elita cranks. It’s a steal for the price I paid.
