This morning (7:30ish?) I was heading eastbound on W&OD and at the Little Falls St crossing there were signs up about lane closure ahead. Not yet closed, but there was a van unloading stuff for repairs and there was a lot of wood. Perhaps the were there to repair the wooden bridge between Little Falls and Lee Hwy. I hope they were since the rot holes are deep enough to lose small dogs in.

Ohio Drive from the 395 underpass to Buckeye Dr at Hains Point was milled this morning. There’s slopes, but be careful turning at the corners.

They appear to have finished this and did a great job. While I was riding around Haines Point today the double line was added to the new pavement. I don’t know if they intend to do the next section to the Inlet Bridge.

Maybe add a bell to your warning system. They seem to work for most joggers/peds, except for the tourists who get dropped off by the buses on Maine Ave. at the Washington Marina.
Is that ever true!

That whole trail’s gone rogue.
No wonder it took so long to find Chandra Levy’s remains.

W&OD between MM12 and MM12.5 where they are installing rip rap in the creek. The pavement on the East bound side of the trail has a 20 foot section of wheel eating size cracks that are parallel to travel.
Isn’t the construction on the westbound side of the trail? Does this mean that this problem is not connected to the construction?

ParticipantAt about 9:30 this morning, I slowed down heading westward on the Maine Avenue sidewalk and then stopped at the light where the 14th Street Bridge exit ramp empties onto Maine. Several tour buses turned right onto Maine. Then the light turned red for the ramp and green for me, but a bus stopped completely blocking the curb indentation. I had to get off my bike and walk across. Another biker following flintstoned across.

I would also call the police. Anecdotally, I have seen a few drivers run that light. Maybe because it is (kinda) new or maybe there aren’t good sight lines or they are just looking ahead to try to make the light at Sunset Hills? It’s worth waiting there to make sure the road is clear and/or the cars see you. (But definitely report that; there is no “right on red” into the gas station — that is ridiculous.)
Even if there were a road there were one could go right on red, a right-on-red driver must still come to a full stop and does not have the right of way over someone going straight on the green. I agree that the sight liens for the driver are not good, but …

The problem with this is that one person’s “leading up to the blind curve” is another person’s “after the blind curve.” It’s impossible with a single line to differentiate which direction one is traveling.
Agreed. So they should use the more restrictive of the two if they can’t paint two lines. That’s what is done on the W&OD.

This lesson is no longer necessary. Those oncoming headlights aren’t that much brighter than your smartphone screen.
Of course, for otherwise how could you use the smartphone when driving?

I admit, I don’t carry flat-fixing tools. The reason is that I get a flat maybe once every two years. And by the time I do, in my experience, whatever pump I have been carrying for the intervening two years has malfunctioned by that time.
Does anyone have any experience with how long an unused CO2 cartridge will last? And with how long an unused tube will last? If I actually had confidence that everything I needed would last for a couple of years, I might change my habits (especially now that my ride involves a long stretch of the CCT where it’s not practical to get off and take a bus if I get a flat).
I carry flat-fixing tools because if I didn’t I would certainly get flats.
Years ago, I got several flats a year, perhaps one per month. Belted tires have made flats much less common.

What are your opinions on street lights? At some point, we say that safe transportation is worth the cost (in terms of capital and operating dollars, and to the environment).
Probably most people know this, but lights were installed on the W&OD in Herndon a year or two ago.

This may not count as road / trail conditions per se, but 7 dead mice on the MVT near DCA and Gravelly Point this morning.
I assumed this was the result of rodent control. Or perhaps they need better lights and reflective tape if they are going to be out on the bike paths that early after sunrise…
or it could be the bubonic plague. 😮

There’s the ELF, which is quite large, but there’s another guy who rides in this little car thing that looks like a 60’s vintage Formula 1 car. I’ve seen it between Vienna and Reston – basically the same portion of the WOD where I see the ELF.
The little car sounds like what I saw and Buckthorn is in that segment of the W&OD.
