ParticipantI’m not a racer but something of a power spectator.
Here’s a great list of cross races in the Mid-Atlantic.
http://www.cxhairs.com/2012/07/10/mid-atlantic-region-2012-cyclocross-calendar/Tacchino and DCCX are part of the MABRA Super 8 series, so you might want to check out the other races in that.
Also, DCMTB http://www.dcmtb.com/clinics-2012/, The Bike Lane, and Bike Doctor are all running cross clinics right now, so check out their websites for dates ‘n such.
If you’re doing DCCX, you might consider going to one of the DCMTB clinics b/c then you get to ride the actual course.
If you’re in the Arlington area on Wednesday nights, I have a friend who does a practice at Gravely Point I can hook you up with.

Heard tonight that this poor guy from WWVC broke his hip on that crash a couple weeks ago. OUCH.
Oh jeez. That ride was a bit of a mess.
But don’t let it deter you! Bumping this to give a heads up for next week. September 4th – 2 Kegs Dogfish Head beer courtesy of Gripped Racing! Word to the wise about the ride: due to a comms SNAFU, we were unaware that the final BBQ ride of the season would be the second Tuesday in September, not the first. So, there will be beer to drink on the 4th, but no tacos till the week after. So make sure to bring a waffle for after the ride! Also, the route on the BBQ ride on the 11th will be different than usual, so be sure to attend next week and get your hill rides in while you can!
And as I mentioned before, the REAL reason we’re excited (okay, yeah, I lured you in with beer;-) is because we’ll be hosting some folks from Companions for Heroes, a non-profit organization that matches shelter dogs with active duty military personnel, military veterans, and first-responders recovering from the psychological challenges they suffered during service to our country. We’re currently raising money for a C4H Emergency Fund for times when the dogs placed with veterans need special care and the veteran cannot afford it. We’re collecting till next Tuesday, so please consider donating – every little bit helps! http://www.giveforward.com/c4h_emergencyfund

I was just cruising around Hains Pt awhile ago, and a young lady kept passing me and falling back over and over. I didn’t think anything of it. Turns out she was doing intervals, and apologized to me for speeding up and slowing down. Didn’t bother me a bit
Wasn’t me but sounds like me. I usually pass/get passed by people and never see them again, but every once in a while I’ll fall in with someone like that and always feel kinda bad about it. I usually end up ruining my rest intervals b/c I’m trying to stay ahead. Never works.

The “Right Now” section is accurate: light rain.
This is what has frustrated me the last few days. It might be pouring down rain, but weather.com says it’s partly cloudy. Argh! I’ve been at work late a couple of days, check the weather before going home, change my clothes, and suddenly it’s raining. When I check the radar for my area to see what’s going, the radar doesn’t show anything. No green. What the…? Those “slow movers” have been stuck over my office twice this week.

Those spoke lights are great, the tires with reflective sidewalls option is excellent as well.
There’s a lot to be said for just festooning your frame with reflective tape as well. I’m partial to this stuff designed for the Coast Guard.
Seriously, if you go someplace like U-Line, you can get all kinds of conspicuity tape and whatnot. I actually got some for my dog’s leash and collar (It won’t stick to fabric forever; you have to sew it on.), but there are endless applications.

ParticipantIt’s only a small improvement, but a few Light & Motion models have amber side lights for visibility.
I have an Urban that I like a lot:

i think the difference being cyclists are legally allowed on roads and runners are not. if it is legal for them to run on the road, i’d be glad to accommodate them. But when they start running on the road, they are unnecessarily putting cyclists in danger for their own comfort.
Can someone please clarify this? As far as I know, it’s not illegal for pedestrians to be on certain roads. Highways, yes. I can see how it might even be true for roads with sidewalks accessible and in bike lanes (although on Potomac Ave. in Arlington there are bike lanes but no sidewalks, so…), but I don’t know for sure it’s actually against the law. And when you consider roadways outside somewhat urban areas, there are probably more roads without sidewalks than those with them, so you gotta do what you gotta do. Furthermore, anytime that I’ve seen any rules for pedestrians, they always state that they should walk against the flow of traffic. It’s safer to see what may be coming at you.
I know there are some folks who know legal codes for their states backward and forward and would genuinely appreciate any info you might have.

ParticipantBig frownie! Heal up fast, KLizotte!
This is not at all for comparison and more for comic relief, as I can still ride, however gingerly. For those who are merely splint-ed, not cast-ed. This is the reward for clipping a tree and somehow breaking the fall with one finger. I’m being all kinds of rude to everyone I pass when I grab the brakes.
