    The RCP trail in front of KenCen has been detoured up to Rock Creek Parkway, with concrete barriers separating the trail from traffic, similar to the Custis detour from a while back…no more Covered Walkway From Hell!

    Yeah, but the context is also that the current neighborhood was established in 1940, and most of the street layout even earlier (the house I used to own there was built in 1939). You might make it less dangerous for peds/cyclists on the margins, but for what it is (essentially a streetcar suburb), it’s pretty damn walkable, and it frankly serves as a model of how walkable a low-ish density suburb can be.

    Strava says 3% average, but that all depends on where you stop/start the segment. Oddly, my PR for that segment was on a fixed gear…

    Seems like the perfect opportunity to turn those crosswalks into speed tables. Also, the speed limit between Longfellow (maybe even Patrick Henry) and McKinley should be lowered to 15mph.

    Personally, I usually just take M/Canal to Foxhall to MacArthur and ride MacArthur all the way out. In DC, it’s two lanes and low traffic, so you can take the right lane without too much stress…further out you can ride the shoulder. The short stint on Canal may be intimidating if you aren’t super comfortable riding in traffic, but there is a sidewalk you can take if you prefer.

    The solution to this problem is to just blow a bunch of money on a power meter. Cadence/speed/GPS conflict solved!

    I’d take it outside to an area with a clear view of the sky, turn it on, and just let it sit for like 10 minutes for the GPS to lock. I know that when I travel somewhere outside my normal area, it always takes my GPS some extra time, so if the unit is new it may just be something like that. Maybe also make sure the firmware is up to date?

    Ugh, this detour is going to be a huge PITA for W&OD>Custis riders. For the more comfortable road riders out there, hopping off the W&OD and onto Washington Blvd at Lee Hwy is probably the fastest way to get to the Custis (or vice versa). I usually take Washington Blvd to the Custis entrance at Aberdeen. If you don’t mind the non-bike lane portions of Washington Blvd, it’s much faster than the trail route, IME.

    The C&O towpath was in pretty good shape, surprisingly…at least from Fletcher’s to Chain Bridge. Some frozen puddles, but nothing that was really a hazard or not easily avoidable.

    I hope they have sturdier seatpost collars! I’ve had problems with loose seatposts on a majority of the Jumps I’ve ridden. Of course I’ve tried to tighten them, but the nuts always seem to be stuck.

    TR Bridge is like, 50% unrideable. I had to walk most of it tonight. Custis is re-freezing fast and felt kinda dangerous in a lot of places, even with studs. The zig-zag at the East Falls Church basketball courts is also awful. I slid out even with studs, but the studs probably helped keep upright.

    The DC portion of the CCT is “rideable,” but not great. Basically, there’s like a 1-foot wide strip of relatively smooth, but non-slick ice. Thankfully, there aren’t many people out on it. With my knobby studded tires and gravel bike, I was good for about 7-8mph. The Towpath is absolutely unrideable, however. There’s basically a 3-inch thick layer of frozen slush under the snow and it froze hard enough that it has zero give and you can’t just power through it. Maybe a fat bike or semi-fat bike could do it, but I ended up walking most of the C&O section of my commute.

    The RCP path from the volleyball courts to West Potomac Park is barely rideable, but should get enough sun today to make it okay for tomorrow.

    The trail on Maine Ave. in front of Washington Marina was not cleared in any way and is an absolute mess.
