I was told that it has been plowed, and is actually in better shape that the roads, in the Montgomery County section. However, DC has not plowed its section of the trail.

The DC section was actually fun to ride this morning, mainly because the northbound side of the trail was mostly undisturbed and covered in dry snow. But it will be hell this evening after it has been packed down.

Rolled out with the 45NRTH studs on this morning. The studs weren’t really necessary this morning, but the tires are actually better in snow than my gravel tires because they’re knobbier. Also, the CCT and other trails are on course to be an icy mess this evening. 23 degrees also felt very warm, which kinda weirded me out.

I tried posting a ride from yesterday, and Strava only partially got it.
It shows no distance, but captured my elevation profile.

I tried deleting it and re-entering, but the same thing happened.
    Suggestions?

Does the map show your route? One thing you could do is export the ride out of Strava and edit it with something like https://wtracks.appspot.com/. Also, you should be able to manually edit the TCX file (again, exporting it out of Strava or Garmin Connect) with a text editor…even notepad should work. At the top of all the text, you should see xxxxx.xx. Just change that to match your mileage, save the file with a new name, then manually upload to Strava.

Wow, it’s warm for you in the city.

At 3º out in Reston, even Amfib tights were chilly for me, but once I slowed down (off-road / mtb), they were fine. My hands and feet were not fine (no bar mitts on my mtb; lobster gloves were not enough), so that wasn’t the most pleasant bike ride. If Friday is colder than 12º I will probably do a loose layer on top of the Amfib tights.

I’m glad to get such cold weather early on, because it’s making the more typical “in the 20s” weather so pleasant by comparison. I’m just ecstatic that tomorrow’s morning temps are mid 20s.

Strava says 14, which it might’ve been once I climbed into McLean, but Weather Underground was showing 16 in DC. But I also left at 730 when the sun was coming up, so I think that made a difference too.

On a more related note, I tried my AmFibs today just to try and duplicate my previous issues…with knee warmers I was actually comfortable enough. Any colder probably would’ve been unpleasant, but 16 degrees was okay.

, I wonder if the salient difference here is that I’m wearing shorts under the amfib tights. This morning was about the coldest that I’d consider wearing them, but they really were plenty warm for 1.25 hrs. But having an extra layer that is shorts makes a big difference in warmth, as I’ve learned from the my padded-tights Sugoi debacle.

My problem area with the AmFibs was my knees and shins…not awful, but they just weren’t as warm as I was expecting based on the reviews. Part of the problem is that my commute is essentially flat until I cross Chain Bridge, so my legs don’t warm up until pretty far into my ride…so basically my legs were cold in the AmFibs for the first 10 miles of my commute, then sweaty after the final 2 miles.

So…are we talking about legit “sock game” or just “who can wear the wackiest socks?!” because those are two very different things.

Do you need clear goggles to bike at night? I have yellow ones at home I think, but I never use them since I start and end my day in the dark this time of year. I keep considering ordering clear goggles for days like today, but then not doing it. I was ok this AM, but I really didn’t like the cold air that got to my eyes around my clear safety glasses. It definitely caused me to tear up a bit. Avoiding that feeling on really cold days might be worth it.

There are some, particularly of the recreational shooting sort, that believe yellow glasses actually enhance low-light vision…I think the science is inconclusive, but yellow lenses should be fine for night riding since they don’t really reduce the amount of light coming in.

I have a set of AmFibs. I was hoping they’d be better for temps under 20 than my current heavy winter tights (Sugois of some form), but was disappointed during one of the cold snaps a few weeks ago when it was like 19 and my legs were uncomfortably cold. This morning I wore wool knickers under my Sugois and felt great, but I think I would’ve been way too cold with just the Amfibs (I can’t wear the Amfibs over my knickers because I accidentally bought Amfibs with a pad). I don’t mean that to say there’s anything wrong with AmFibs, but I had probably overly high expectations of their warmth and was disappointed.

Today my balaclava froze to my face.

Turns out my hair got a little sweaty this morning (my AM commute ends with one huge hill and some rollers)…it then froze between the time I was parking my bike and entering my building.

Ski goggles for me too. I hate wearing them, but they make a big difference in cold weather comfort. I pretty much wear them only when it’s below 20 or so. Both of my Garmins were effectively dead this morning due to sitting in my shed for the last week. Both had full batteries, but one wouldn’t stay on and the other wouldn’t get a GPS fix. Looks like it’s now officially “keep the electronic bike gear in the house” season…

The CCT is completely clear from G-Town to Fletcher’s, and the C&O is clear from Fletcher’s to Chain Bridge, and the Chain Bridge sidewalk is also clear. Surprisingly, even the ramps up to Chain Bridge were clear.

The CCT was generally okay. Not enough snow on it to make a big impact, and there weren’t enough riders to pack down what little snow there was. The RCP trail in Foggy Bottom was a little sketch, but not really slick as far as I could tell.

The Case Bridge path had a decent amount of snow, but hadn’t seen enough traffic to get packed down and slick.
