Participant2/18/22 – War Memorial
Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II

“The Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II honors Japanese Americans who lived in incarceration camps and those who served in the US military during WWII. The memorial incorporates symbolism such as a zen garden motif, but the most striking feature may be the bronze sculpture of Japanese cranes entangled in barbed wire.”

On my ride today in southern Maryland I happened upon this rather regal steeple on the Nanjemoy Baptist Church in Nanjemoy, MDPS… sorry about the rotated photo, no idea why the forum did that.

ParticipantLooks like a fun… and delicious ride! Hope to make it!

ParticipantAlan… you were suppose to be on Team 7, so that we could be on the same team again this year! We did pretty well last year. If I remember correctly, I think our Team 27 had the most miles of any team, but actually came in second on points.
Best wishes to all you “Fourteeners”!

ParticipantSorry to be late to your #PO reindeer game, but did a couple deca-slease rides over that last two wintery days, and managed to include your #PO game on both of the rides. Of course now I’ve already used up my two most conveniently located post offices.

Have no idea why the second photo rotated as both photos were taken vertically.

re: Club 27 Below, there were surely some days I did not want to be out there.
I second that Mike as another person on Club 27 Below. There were more than a handful of days where cycling conditions were not the most enjoyable!

ParticipantLast Sunday morning I didn’t have anything better to do so I sat down and created my version of a route to visit the Four Corner Boundary Stones, then rode the route in the afternoon, finishing by sunset at the South Cornerstone. The route is 54 miles, but then I decided to add on 8 miles after completing the route by retracing a few miles on the southwest diagonal to make it a metric century. Here’s my RWGPS route and a few photos:

I know for certain NW1 is accessible, because I have a photo that I took. I believe the others are, too. NW3 can be seen from the road, and I bet the owners are used to having people come look at it. Don’t know about NW2, but there are others here who can probably weigh in on that one. NW4 onward are in DC.
FWIW… last year I created a route for my BAFS team that visited NW1 and NW3, both are located deep inside backyards.
We viewed NW1 from the street, it’s straight back from the driveway, but I had to zoom in big time for the photo.
At NW3, while we were viewing the stone from the street we were approached by the teenage son who invited us up into their backyard to view the boundary stone close up. The father came out and explained that after he bought the property he had landscaped the backyard, and of course did not move the boundary stone, but leveled the area a bit around it. I think the result worked the NW3 boundary stone very nicely into their landscaping and backyard patio.
NW2 is high on a bluff off Old Dominion and is not viewable from public domain as far as I’m aware… the property owner at NW3 said that he’d asked the resident there for permission to walk through his yard and had viewed the NW2 boundary stone.
