ParticipantThat was a GREAT ride despite you tricking me into eating vegan food. Also great to put a few faces to names from the forum.
Thanks for inviting me!

ParticipantThe reports of the W&OD east of Gallows give me hope that I can bike to the start of dcv’s coffee’s ride tomorrow (which is only a few miles) rather than driving.
Oh, and my Lake sub-zeroes came in the mail yesterday. Have you looked at next week’s forecast? You’re welcome.
Tania
ParticipantWe might need a practice run. You know, to make sure everything runs smoothly on the 14th.
Tania
ParticipantWait wait wait WAIT.
There are MULTIPLE PIE BREAKS?????

I’ve been riding the WOD from Gallows to the Custis interchange this week and I can attest that the Fairfax and Falls Church sections are still bad unless you have studs, and even then it’s bone shaking with all the ruts. Got home last night to find that my rear wheel cracked at the rim seam…. perhaps taking the moguls at speed wasn’t the best idea
Dickie – how is the mile from Gallows to Virginia Lane (skinny slicks)? If I can get to Virginia Lane, then I can take Boomer2U’s route to the Custis. Otherwise I’d have to take Shreve from Gallows/29 and there’s zero shoulder…

No Tania Commuter Caravan tomorrow. Things are just to messy and are likely to be icy. Maybe on March 2nd if next weekend isn’t a total mess.
My $$$ Lakes come Wednesday so I’m predicting warm and sunny.

Wait! I thought you didnt stop for coffee for fear of getting cold (or something like that)
I was planning on running inside, securing the bribes and then heading back out to do laps around the block. Because I’ll likely have no clue how to get to where I’m going from wherever we stop.

Ok, so are we going to have a Monday Tania Commuter Caravan from Dunn Loring to Metro Center?
If we decide to throw in a coffee stop, coffee for caravan is on me. Happy to bribe.

Tania,
I rode in today from Mile 8.0 on the WOD at Virginia Lane through the streets of Falls Church until the Custis trail near the East Falls Church Metro and then into DC via the Key Bridge. I would be happy to ride with you so that you can learn the safest route through Falls Church. Just let me know.I’d love that as I tend to only step out of my biking route comfort zone if I have company. I can bike in any day next week so long as it’s not raining/snowing – I have great cold weather gear (thanks to KayakCyndi and being part polar bear), but nothing that I’d test in the wet for the length of my commute.
Huge thanks!
Tania
ParticipantI’d be going to metro center, just a few blocks from ME Swings. I’d love (and very much appreciate) to hear alternate routes! Looks like M to Pennsylvania is the easiest?
I just ordered Lake boots. This means warmer weather is imminent.
Tania
ParticipantI desperately want to bike in on Monday but my level of chicken-ness on snow/ice isn’t even on rcannon’s scale that he posted a few weeks ago.
Hoping this weekend’s rain makes for Tania-clear conditions Monday (Gallows Rd from ~Dunn Loring metro to W&OD/Custis and on into DC via Roosevelt Bridge).

I can’t imagine ever hooking up cadence, power, hr, etc.
My priorities for this device are:
1) Recording for Strava
2) Not wasting phone battery on a long ride when I might need the phone for emergencies
3) Directions, though I’m fine with downloading a route from somewhere, if I’m actually lost I can use my phoneMy worry with used is that the battery life won’t be great. Can you replace the batteries?
I was about to ask if I could hijack your thread but turns out your priorities above are exactly mine (although I wouldn’t mind a HR monitor too but I have a watch so not required). I’d love to be able to download a pre-existing Route By Dirt.

ParticipantMy regular bike gloves (not winter specific) were perfectly fine this am; most everyone who passed me actually warned me first; I passed two other bikers* (!!!!); and a cab AND a Prius stopped to let me pass safely through the Intersection of Doom.
I kinda feel like I won the lottery.
* Yeah, ok. They were both loaded down with cargo.

When we’re talking about cycling going mainstream, I think studs for our region are out of the question. Most people want a low-maintenance, out of the box solution. They don’t want to constantly put studs on and take studs off. I’d guess it’d be ok if you need studs for one long stretch, but with the weather we have here, we have to have non-stud options for the relatively short and time-separated spells when we get snow and ice.
I absolutely suck at changing tires (it takes a half an hour — sometimes each — and a lot of bad words) so this for me is a huge impediment. And I’m not buying another wheel set for several reasons.

Can poseurs join the ride?
Well, he invited ME, so…yes. Sadly, this poseur can’t make it.
