I think I got into the event before the cap was reached. I will be at the hh, coming from work in Takoma Park.

You could stay on the MVT a little longer and use either the TR Bridge or Key Bridge. Not sure how that affects your route or route distance, but either would get you past most of the tourist traffic.

When commuting to Lanham, I used to ride up the CCT from Key Bridge then drop off and cross Rock Creek Park using Chestnut/Wise and Sherrill/Aspen, then ride through Takoma Park. It added mileage but kept me away from areas I didn’t want to bike through. Other than a brief bit along Beach Drive, it was pretty low stress (until crossing the Anacostia, which wouldn’t affect you).

Crossing over on TR or Key would definitely add some considerable time to my morning commute, which I don’t know that I can afford without waking up earlier than I already am. But I did come home across TR on one of my commutes so far. I connected to the RCP trail and took it down to the river, then came up around the Kennedy Center to cross TR bridge. That was a pretty good alternative to the mall/tidal basin crowds.

I think I’ll keep my morning commute up 15th and deal with whatever crowds may be out first thing in the morning. As for the afternoon, I think I’ll be going wide to avoid the WH/Mall areas.

Here are a few photos of her. She was called Shirly.

I went by the rack this evening, thinking maybe I missed some evidence, but there was nothing to be found.

That’s the one I used with an extra cable. I’ve contacted the lock company to start that process. Fingers crossed.

Bicycle Space, a fantastic bike shop located across the street from the Convention Center, has weekend social rides of all different levels. They’re a great way to meet likeminded folks! http://bicyclespacewdc.com/rides-events/month/calendar

Thanks DCLiz! I’ll be there this weekend for sure! And I’ll try to get to the Thursday 7th street social ride too. I love riding after dark.

Hello again Ted. We’re doing a casual group ride tomorrow out of Proteus in College Park. Looping around the Greenbelt area. Will be mostly slow riding; however, we’ll also go to Greenbelt National Park (smallest in the nation!), where roadies can open it up for some fast laps. Easy to get out this way — take the NW branch trail to the NE branch trail to the Paint Branch trail (or College Park trolley trail). -Jeff

Greenbelt, is this ride a weekly ride? I definitely would like to get over to Proteus bikes, but I think I am going to work on getting my room together today, and I’ll probably go check out rock creek park since it’s just a couple blocks west from me.

I’ve also joined a couple of cycling and other interest groups on meetup.com, so that should help me get to meet some new people as well.

    Thanks for your response.

Bright Lime Green! It’s a fun color. They coordinate with the website colors and the posters.

I like it too. I think I’m going to get one printed(unless I can buy a printed one) to add to my gallery…er room.

I like how the photo on the bike to work page is a solid 50/50 split of “helmet” v. “no helmet.” +1 for realism.

At first i was going to comment how the riders are all riding the wrong way in the bike lane…. But then I noticed its a two-way bike lane.

Thanks for all of the great advice, and discussion. I found the perfect place just inside the district on Piney Branch rd. I’ll be only two miles from work, and I got a steal of a monthly rent. I’m looking forward to joining the WABA community next month when I make the big move.

I’m looking to get involved with a local community gardening co-op or something of that sorts. I enjoy getting to be involved in introducing people to riding bikes, whether that be for fun, or for transportation reasons. Cooking is one of my biggest passions, so I enjoy going to farmers markets witha wide variety of local and diverse fresh vegetables. I imagine cooking is one way I’ll look to meet people and develop friendships (when I’m not on the bike that is).

I’d say riding, cooking, involvement/volunteering are things that I seek to do regularly.

But also getting to spend time outdoors, throwing frisbee, layin in the grass or hanging out in a hammock. I’m a simple, take it easy, no need to rush kind of person.

So bars aren’t at the top of my priority list. I’m looking for a place that has a livel, active community that I can be a part of. Good parks for enjoying the outdoors, young active folk who enjoy their neighbors. From looking at maps of the area, I can see there isno shortage of parks, and outdoor space.

Being that this would be my first experience living away from home, or school, I honestly can’t be completely sure what I’m looking for. I just know that I don’t want to base my search around bars alone. I’ll find my favorite hangouts once I get settled in.

Before I even consider bars, or clubs (I drink occasionally, not weekly or nightly). I need to worry about a good area, that is bicyclist friendly, and fun area to live in. I appreciate the advice on bars and restaurants, but right now, a place to feel comfortable riding my bike for errands, and not feeling like I’m going to be broken into because the folks across the street have seen me with three different bikes going in and out.

That is a lot of info. I’ll be visiting the area next week, and I’ll scout out some areas. The more base info I have, the better prepared I’ll be in knowing what’s what. This is exciting stuff. First time I’ll be taking off on my own!

Coming from Atlanta, and the mountains of western nc for college, I am used to hilly rides. That is one reason why I’m not headed to Florida. Too flat for me. I just bought a map of the dc area so
I can study up on locations and distance.

Congrats on landing a job and welcome.

I know nothing about Takoma Park, but I’ve heard it’s very bike friendly. I have some friends in a group house in the District who are looking to fill an opening. They are super-duper bikey (I know them through my husband’s cycling team). I’ll see if the place is still open and PM you.

I would be open to considering the group house for starting out while I get myself established in the area for the first few months. Please do let me know what the status is with it.

And super-duper bikey would be a plus!
