Perspective is everything. If you are in a hovercraft 100 feet above ground, yes it is confusing. If you are driving that stretch it isn’t bad at all.

Sorry for the close call. My older daughter (age 11, with Down Syndrome) now calls everybody “Dude” because of years of sitting in the car with her dad driving. She’ll meet an old lady can say “Hi, dude!”

My 12 year-old has Ds and he has taken to calling his brothers “dickbiscuit”. Thanks YouTube! #unrelated

And then there was the pickup truck this morning about 7:45 trying to turn west on the Custis from the Veitch St access trail. No sign on the vehicle to say if it was official or just some really lost soul.

Heh – I ran across this one a well. I think it was a tree pruning support truck but they looked completely lost. They were on Custis when I saw them and they looked like they wanted off. NOW.

Wow that link he posted is pretty scary. Hope that pickup driver was charged with assault.

Well thinking more about this, I feel like an idiot. I was kind of annoyed at the guy for yelling at me, but for the love of god, I was in the bike lane during rush hour. That was dumb.

In my defense, while I have run down that bike lane a hundred times, it was, before Monday, always in the early afternoon. The other day was the first time I have ever run down it during rush hour. That would probably explain why I have never really come across cyclists other than the rickshaw drivers before now. Still…dumb.

My bike commute actually takes me east-west (penn ave in front of the white house down to CCT) so I haven’t really used any bike lanes and didn’t appreciate the issues from the point of view of the bike commuter. DUMB.

Anyway – I am seeing a pattern here, thanks for helping me wise up.

Cool. That’s why I posted this – mostly to get feedback. Will stay out of there from now on.

I will say that it isn’t clear that the lane is bikes only. Maybe it is clear to regular bicycle commuters but I see runners in there all the time and I wonder if more signage would make a difference.

I have seen joggers randomly U-turn on the WOD a number of times. With headphones, of course. Couple that with the cyclists who will pass between two cyclists approaching each other in opposite directions and its a wonder this doesn’t happen more often.

M Street is totally fine in the morning. The far right lane is usually fairly wide open.

It is horrific in the afternoon.

McLean is pretty bad for bike commuting. Unless you have direct access to Westmoreland (which has nice bike lanes), you are putting yourself in serious danger every time you bike commute.

I come home on Old Glebe to Kirby and both have sections with about as much shoulder as 123 coming up from the river does. It is very scary.

Old Dominion would be a great commuting option, but it also has little to no shoulder or sidewalk and during rush hour I would get pancaked.

So, luckily, I have access to Westmoreland. But going the same way each way every day gets boring – and it takes me about 2 milles out of the way.

Anyway. its all much better (just not safer) than driving.

Best part of vvill’s video is that INTERMINABLE light. Seems like I get it every day.

No video can do 41st justice. Only doing it does it justice.

I wouldn’t want to have the 41 st hill as part of my commute. I’ll stick with the two sisters on the Custis trail at Glebe Rd.

I am lucky enough to have the choice of 41st OR two sisters for my commute. I fully expect to one of these days see my heart explode out of my chest, Alien-style. That would at least be a spectacular way to go…

    Yesterday afternoon.

You: waiting for the light at the Lee Highway crossing on the W&OD, wearing kickass skull and crossbones bike shoes.

    Me: Wishing I was cool.
