ParticipantSomeone just flagged Gravelly Point Northbound Sprint as hazardous. What the heck? I’ve never seen an issue there – not even close.

I haven’t had to walk it in a while, although I admit that I have in the past. My usual 5-6mph riding pace, however, continues to bring me shame. But I must say that riding up the s-curve at the top has is great bike-handling practice.
That’s actually part of one of my favorite segments called All the Way to the Top. That one can best be described as, “Did you like tasting your heart near the end of 41st Street? Well keep peddling, because you are about to see it explode out of your chest!”

I have done it on my commuter, but the first time I tried it on my Orbea, the derailleur hanger and derailleur exploded and took a few spokes with them. Haven’t gotten up the nerve to try it since I got it fixed.

ParticipantHah! I remember doing that once on MY fully loaded and panniered Trek FX 7.something hybrid and thinking I was going to trip and tumble into traffic at any second. Kudos for doing it WHILE filming.

ParticipantNo wonder you were such a great Freezing Saddles team captain – you are just a natural born ass-kicker. Cancer’s ass was just another thing on the list.
Seriously – that article was mega-inspiring. I posted it on fb and I really hope it takes off. You did an unbelievable job of synthesizing the joy and wonder of bicycle commuting.
THANK YOU.

I lifted this from another thread, but I believe that shows the right place.

ParticipantYou can fly going westbound. Probably not such a great thing, but still 100% better.

ParticipantWhat time will you be coming through DC? M Street before 8am is pretty solid as you have the far right lane to yourself much all of the way (and it’s downhill). You take that to Washington Circle, then take Pennsylvania Ave. to the White House. At that point you can get on the cycle track on New York Ave. and head toward Union Station.

ParticipantHallelujah! Between this and the WOD fix near Wilson, my commute is soon going to be like riding on VELVET ROADWAYS.
Maybe they can tackle the berms at Custis next?

ParticipantI had a meeting at one of my kid’s school yesterday morning so I thought I should make it a car day. We finished at 9am and I stopped by Sweet Leaf in McLean to get some breakfast to go. I was on the road by 9:20am. I got to work at 10:45am.
On my slowest bike days I get in faster than that. I don’t see how people do it every day.

ParticipantMy sense of direction is terrible, but I hope this is the portion of the trail where they have spray painted around the bumps.

SO called an audible when she saw me gearing up and I took the car ride of shame to work.
I just feel like a total sucker sitting in traffic on the Roosevelt Bridge or K Street (depending on my car route).

ParticipantMy wife is pretty cool about me biking in any conditions but she does draw the line on lightning. Which is good because I’m the idiot that says “lightning? pshaw…I have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting hit!”

ParticipantMe: Grudgingly getting on the sidewalk at E. Basin Dr.
You: Walking two abreast with your friend on said sidewalk.
Me: [SUPER CHEERFULLY] On your left!
You: Not budging.
Me: Hey guys, coming up on your left! *ring* *ring*
You: S l o w l y move to the right with your friend, give me death glare..”You know that bikes are not allowed on the sidewalks right?”
Me: (NOT SUPER CHEERFULLY) Actually, they are right here…that road is one way, so bikes are supposed to be on the sidewalk.
You: No.
Me: We can go ask the police officer right there…
You: Look of pure disgust.
Me: Reach for flaming trident, or witty/crushing barb, or something. Find none. Bike on.
Bike on!
