It depends on where you draw your “wealthy” line. The point JeffC is making (I think) is that it’s better for the environment to carpool in a 7 year old Honda Accord than it is to drive by yourself in a brand new Prius.
Sure, and I agree. I think living in McLean has warped my expectations of what is normal.

Two reasons I hate the Prius car, not the drivers, but the cars.
Second, at least in VA, we reward smug wealthy people that can afford a new Prius the right to drive on HOV lanes alone. HOV lanes should be about rewarding people to car pool not rewarding wealthy people who can afford a new car. Moreover, on the freeway, the Prius is engaging the gas engine so burning about the same amount of fuel as other compact cars. Even though I obviously ride my bike to work many days, while riding on the Custis and when I do take the Orange Line, I see plenty of selfish Prius drivers alone and afraid to car pool doing nothing more for the environment than a solitary driver in a compact Ford or Honda would.
Smug and wealthy? Not exactly how I would characterize most drivers of alternative fuel cars. Sure, maybe some are one or the other, but my guess is that most folks just want to save a few bucks on gas every month. Wealthy folks are driving Audis and BMWs and Range Rovers and MBs. NOT Prii.

ParticipantYeah…not yet. Still driving and crying.
Saw the doc this week and I get to start running in July and we are shooting for first week of August for the bike. Fingers crossed, because this is KILLING me.
I miss coming here every day and swapping stories.

Well, it should be easier to not get a new one soon. Had a little accident on the way home Sunday.
Ugggh. Really sorry to hear that. Surgery?

Is your metalwear temporary or permanent?
Temporary – should come out in a year or two according to the doctor. Once it does I am going to affix it to the front of my bike, mustache-style!

Wow, does it hurt?
Yeah – way more than I thought it would, too. I was feeling pretty good about not having to take any of the percocet they gave me last week but I’m 3 or 4 into the bottle now.
Broken ribs seem like they are healing quickly, so that’s a plus!

That looks more interesting than my x-rays. Uh…so did they not put screws into the middle two positions…and then put a screw in at 90 degrees through bone w/o a plate?
Hard to tell from the film but the smaller screw is holding a large splinter fragment in place and is attached to one of the two larger bones. It’s a sh!tshow.

ParticipantFinally closing the loop on this one. 2 hours of surgery, one titanium plate, and seven screws later and I am all fixed up. Post-op recovery lasted 4-5 hours longer than expected because they went crazy on the anesthesia.
Required hideous x-ray below. See everyone in a few months!

ParticipantOkay, okay…last one. Went to see the orthopedist today. He didn’t like the angle of the x-ray the hospital took. It showed a thin, almost hairline, fracture in my clavicle. So he took another x-ray. New image shows butterfly fracture and significant displacement (3cm).
Surgery next week. No bike for 3 months. F Me.
