Thanks for everyone’s kind words. I am still trying to process this. Its worse in that I feel totally stupid – I locked my bike up in DC with just a cable lock (“only a couple of hours” is evidently quite enough time for a cable to be clipped, even in a very busy area).
I am not hopeful about getting it back. Next step is heading to an MPD station to get a hard copy of the police report (that is what they said to do when I reported it to MPD on Saturday). My wife is calling our insurance company today to see if bike theft is covered. I hope we can get something.
Then I have to go through the hassle of bike buying (we are at N=0 now) Which should be fun, but under the circumstances is hassle.
I have come to rely on the bike for transportation, for exercise, but also for mental and emotional refreshment. And of course I have made wonderful friends. Not sure I will have a bike in time for Freezing Saddles. I won’t make the mileage goal for 2015 I was thinking about. All my planned rides, long rides, brewery rides, rides to see new infra and get policy insights, bike fun rides, will have to wait.
At least I still have my CaBi membership. Won’t work for commuting (both because I am so slow on a CaBi bike, and because I have about a 20 minute walk to the nearest CaBi station to my home) but at least I can try to keep in shape. I did not have it in me to shlep my helmet in to the office today though. I don’t think I can do BAFS with CaBi alone, so I need to get a new bike soon if I am going to participate on a team (mayhaps I can still be a slacker?)
Not sure what size bike you ride but I would be more than happy to let you use one of my bikes in the interim. Just let me know (and yes, I do have geared bikes, too
).

ParticipantThese are all extremely funny and true. Especially the one about Steve O.

ParticipantThe West McLean/Falls Church/N Arlington nexus is kind of great. Close to everything, lots of bike infrastructure. Plus you can ride to Maryland without having to actually live there!

AND…detour adds a half mile to my commute each way, meaning I get an extra 50 miles or so for BAFS2017 by taking the detour. Win.
OR you could skip all that garbage and just do an 80 mile ride with me again on the last day of BAFS! Win-Win!

ParticipantThis morning we rode Glebe from right after Arlington Ridge all the way to Eads and it was fine. I assume this is what everyone who is coming from the west is doing now, right?

ParticipantI could see using e-assist on the flats because those are boring and lame.
