Steve, Thanks so much for organizing this fun event yesterday. We had a great group. Consularrider, DismalScientist and Sjclaeys rode to Port City and several more of us joined them there. The brewery tour was interesting, and all of the beers were good!

Thank you! And thanks to all who came. I had a great time and look forward to doing it again with more riders. The brewery tweeted a picture of the 2pm tour so I’ll try to post it here tomorrow. You can find at least one HiViz jacket in the crowd.

Awesome, I am glad first impressions are good! I really am happy with these for all-season commuting. Well, and just riding in the winter period.

Plus I they come in colors, which meant I got the chance to get real matchy…..

I also recommend (as I’m sure many do) the Panaracer T-Serv tires. I have the reflective sidewall 28s for commuting; the 25s are nice too. I’ve heard good things about the Armadillos too, but the T-Servs are cheaper (online) and lighter.

Happy to say I took Hozn’s advice and got the t-Servs. Got to ride them today for the first time and was extremely happy. We talk a lot about how frame material can change the feel of the ride, but not tires. Going from vittoria zaffino 23s to the panaracer 25s made the ride feel very very smooth. Thanks for the advice here, as well as the tires thread!

If people want to follow the DismalScientist, by all means go for it. I just think I’m sitting this one out, at least as far as the riding goes. The drinking on the other hand? I’m in.

Jrenault, don’t listen to Bilsko. He might be a nice guy and a good rider, but trying to take Two Hearted off the top IPA list is nonsense. I’d agree that Racer, while good, isn’t as good, but still. Two Hearted, Founders Centennial, maybe Stone? I need a drink….

Is it the basic route Google suggests?

Fair enough. Though who know what that means. :D I think the main thing is just that I don’t feel comfortable leading it without ever having ridden the route. I’ll definitely explore it as a possible route for next time because even a bunch of rain can make parts of Holmes Run though, so having two routes would be good.

While it may be too late to “un-cancel” the ride, I would suggest that it would still be doable, just not via Holmes Run. You could follow the NCVC Tuesday Night Sprints route that leaves from Spokes in Alexandria and takes maintained streets down to Eisenhower.

Thanks for the thought. I’m going to keep it canceled this time though. I don’t know that route at all and so not sure I should lead a group there. Also, I’m trying to keep the pace slow and so trying to be off major roads as much as possible. I’ll probably go ride that route and check it out before I reschedule, that way I have a backup plan if I need one.

    Again thanks for the info!

We need a term for riders who blare 5 bajillion-lumen headlights on strobe while on the trail, and don’t shield it from oncoming cyclists. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I have decided to cancel the Cap City to Port City ride. With the snow, freeze, thaw cycle over the next two days, I just don’t feel comfortable leading the group, especially thru Homes Run.

I still plan to be at Port City at 1pm, just by car. I believe Kathy is coming as well, Consularrider, and hopefully some others! I will try to reschedule the ride for later in February, or possibly early March. I want to say how much I appreciate all the great feedback and suggestions I got on this ride. Too bad Mother Nature didn’t support it, but sometime soon it should be a great ride!

Hope to see you all on Saturday.

700x23s just didn’t seem smart to ride on for me today. I’ve never wanted a CX bike more than I did today. Especially when the shuttle from Metro to work was late because of a wreck, and I had to stand outside on a sidewalk for 35 minutes. I’m starting to get the feeling back in my toes, it’s only been 3 hours.

Hope all those who rode had a safe trip in. Congrats for the impressive effort!

It was just fine on Saturday and Monday. Is the NPS saying what caused the damage? I recall maintenance trucks being driven over them and causing damage, I can’t think of what else would have happended at that location.

Amazing that the trucks could get thru, what with the 500 bollards around that park.

    Steve,

Happy hour at Port City or Cap City? I just wanted to be sure.

I was thinking Port City, just because it’s somewhere a bit different.

So, this is a little reminder message about the Cap City to Port City ride on Saturday. As has been noted in the thread, the weather on Friday is looking a bit dodgy. I hope to try to make a decision on whether or not we ride by Friday night. Please, please, please check back here or on the FB page before heading down there Saturday. If there is snow accumulation, I will likely cancel the ride. Holmes Run isn’t nearly as well travelled as some of the bigger trails in the area, and is a bit more in the woods. If snow accumulates, I do not want to chance it on the conditions. If anyone has any questions for me, please just let me know.
If the ride is cancelled, and folks still want to do a little afternoon happy hour at Port City, I would certainly be up for meeting there around 1 and hanging out for a while.
So….stay tuned and hopefully the snow will stay away!

Yep it was you. Thing 2? The headwind going south was rough. Demoralizing for me. Tailwind would’ve been good if my legs worked at that point. No need to apologize. I’ll say hi next time.

Spotted the man with the mustache himself today (I think). Going opposite directions on the long boardwalk just south of Belle Haven Marina on the MVT. Probably around 1100? A finely groomed mustache is often easier to spot than HiViz.
