I had plans to do the Tri360 ride this morning, but when I let the dog out at 7am and it was already miserably warm and humid, I thought “you know, today feels like a good day to focus just on school work.” So yeah, I commuted back to bed and then down to the couch where I’ve been sitting since this morning.
Same here. No one showed for the Coffee Shop Ride from Papillon Cycles (which stops at the coffee shop next to Tri360). So I rode down to Phoenix Bike, said the heck with it, and rode back home. 5 miles on the day. Get ’em tomorrow, though…

I finally got around to getting a new front light. I’ve been wanting one of these for a while, as I’d heard that the beam pattern was much better than the round flashlight-style of my current (and most) lights. It’s true–even though it’s relatively low-powered by current standards, it illuminates the actual road better than any light I’ve had before. The road is evenly lit from foreground to distance, rather than having a bright foreground washing out the road further away. The beam cutoff is sharp, so there’s very little light thrown up at oncoming traffic. When riding, the road is just visible, as though riding at dusk rather than riding behind a flashlight. I’ve got it mounted on the fork crown, freeing up some handlebar space, and don’t have to worry about adjusting it at all once I got it dialed in (as opposed to other lights where I was constantly adjusting it up or down depending on conditions).
Other thoughts: it’s big. It takes 4 AA batteries. Some see that as a disadvantage, I find it vastly better than proprietary li-ion packs which either cost a fortune to replace or turn the light into a disposable item. The runtime is about 5 hours on the 4 AAs, and on a long trip you can just toss some extras into the bag (or even pick up regular batteries at a store). The water sealing seems weak. We’ll see how it goes. I definitely would not mount it over the tire without fenders. I still ride with the L&M vis 360, as backup and to provide extra pointable light (e.g., when watching for deer in the trees). But for street riding the Ixon is great by itself.
Someone else’s review that even has pictures: http://stealthtdi.com/blog/randonneuring/2014/01/24/product-review-bm-ixon-iq-premium-led-headlight/
Picked it up from http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m.asp
I have pictures too! http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?6127-quot-Flash-Us-quot-Forum-Contest-Show-us-your-lights!/page3

Is Sedge Moss the guy who was retired and could talk a blue streak? A real rail road buff. Knew so much about the history of the area. Met him about three years ago at the caboose. I hope he hasn’t passed away!
No no, Sedge is still alive and well, lol. He decided it was time to retire from the caboose and in typical fashion, provided for an orderly transition. Joe was his recommendation to hire. And yes, Sedge was perfect at tying the trail’s railroad past and its cycling present together.

ParticipantAnd one more for the road, on this Labor Day: Joe Durel, Park Ranger at the Bluemont Caboose on the W&OD, on their last day of the season.
For those who remember, this is the caboose manned for many years by Sedge Moss (and for those who go back even further, Sedge was a PPTC’er, and serious cyclist).

ParticipantI posted elsewhere (the August Trail Conditions page) about the reconstruction of the 12th St trail connector between S Quincy St and George Mason Dr. Pictures from today:

Memo to BikeArlington- any word on when this will be finished?

ParticipantOn behalf of the crew at Papillon Cycles, thanks again to everyone who rode with us! John’s pic again:

ParticipantOn the surface, they are comparable, and both quality bikes. The Jamis has the lighter aluminum frame, which is an advantage carrying up stairs. 8-speed Nexus vs 7-speed Nexus? Two different Shimano models- both will be good for the climbing work you will do. Tell us how each one feels!

I don’t know if this has been reported elsewhere, but…
The connecting trail between 12th St South and George Mason Drive (part of the 12th St Bike Corridor) has been closed for a week or two now. For a *good* reason- the much-needed reconstruction (wider, with less hazardous climb/descent) is in work. Can’t find any info on when it will be completed.
Since the trail also connects to Randolph Elementary, I will expect by Labor Day?
An update, as of Friday Aug 29, ~7:30pm- Still closed, still under construction. Labor Day’s not gonna happen. Who might know?
